Has Anyone Successfully Used Chicken Droppings To Make fish Feed) (11061 Views)
opes: 11:51am On May 11 |
Heavensake1: Not true. It can only produce maggot which is a good supplementary food for fish. Some practice integrated farming system where poultry pen is built on top of fish pond and aquatic plants cultured on the pond. This practice is to use the chicken manure/waste to fertilize the aquatic plants (duckweed and azolla) which the fish will eventually feed on, not for the fish to feed directly on the chicken manure. 4 Likes |

dominique: This is not true. Any large body of water will severely dilute organic waste and blend them with other matter from multiple sources. Catfish are omnivores so if they eat only waste folks will have been raising them in their septic tanks. They should prosper there by that logic. The truth is closer to the fact that poultry waste contains high levels of nitrates which algae thrive on and with algae comes a whole range of zooplankton and smaller fish that catfish feed on. So poultry waste is the seed and fuel for an ecosystem not the feed itself. 2 Likes |

Sapeleboy911:It's an unwise decision, the fishes are not meant to eat the poo but the maggot generated from the poo. Direct droppings in the pond won't create maggot but a contaminated pond that isn't healthy for the fish 5 Likes |

Why chicken poo and not cow poo or human poo? Did your friend and others sit like dummies in the class and not ask questions? Will the chicken poo be good for any fish? From my reasoning I would say chicken or any poo can be used to feed scavenger fish. Add dead animals too...they will chomp it up. What I know for sure is cat fish will fight each other for human poo. So if you're having a two acre catfish farm .... feel free to build public toilets lover the perimeter.... you'll save a lot on feeding.

Adetobo: excanny: Always say what you really know and have witnessed. You see catfish, it loves poo die. Particualy human poo. i once went to a local beach where the bar and entire structure was constructed on the river with planks. I went to poo in the toilet.. also constructed right on the water with planks. When the first sh.it dropped from my ass the water under me began to boil. Nearly killed me with fright it took a while for me to realized that the entire area was a fish pond of some sort. and huge cat fish were just lying around in the water, waiting for any one to sh.it and they fight over it. I also have a Friend that ran a fish pond and a poultry by the side. I always wondered where all the chicken sh.it went and then he explained the fish eat it. He fed them regular food and also the sh.it. He also fed them leaves sometimes Another wonderful thing you should know is most vegetables do wonderfully well when planted with human sh.it... a lot of it. If you ever go to the market and see ugu looking super rich and the leaves huge... it is not fertilizer did it but the sh.it they planted it in. Human sh.it 1 Like |

OlujobaSamuel: This is true. What will have made this experiment a success is the presence of bio diversity and/or good water quality management. |

mariovito: This is what came to mind too.... But the chicken poo must be kept pretty wet for the production of large maggots. You can then rinse the poo and sieve out the maggots to feed your fish and allow new maggots to breed- I'm sure you can reuse the poo you started with... It's time and labour intensive plus it will be a stinky job but the effort will show in the quality and size of your fish. |

Ammonia, found in abundance in poultry droppings is a great source of protein for fishes as It enhances their body weight and serve as a cheap source of nutrients. Some integrated farmhouse construct poultry pen and cages on top of fish ponds to provide nutrients for the fishes. There are 2 major disadvantage of this method: 1. in the event that the chickens became sick or diseased , either with cholera or Newcastle disease, it affects the fishes. 2. When the water is not flowing steadily or replaced as at when due, it becomes concentrated with ammonia, and this is dangerous to the fishes. |

This is not the first time I will be hearing about catfish being fed with chicken droppings, and I’m quite surprised despite the info be an old one, we can’t find someone who can categorically state with fact based on personal experience that this actually works. What I learned from this is not everything you read or watch on the internet is actually true. |

opes:Yea,what I meant are the maggots that come from the poo. There is a way this isrealites company does it in Ibadan, they even put something in a place that attracts the big tse tse flies that excretes maggots. They nurse these maggots to become big and sell them as fish feeds to those who needs them. 1 Like |

Sapeleboy911:What most people don't understand is that it's not the poo that's being eaten but the maggots inside the poo. It's best to leave the poo for sometime to produce enough maggots. This can be later separated so that only the maggots which is proteinous is fed to the fishes. |

It is true but better for earthen pond because of pollution. I attended the training by soft in ado-odo near owode idiroko in those days.

This can only be achieved through what we call integrated farming, where the poultry is constructed above the fish pond. The poultry dropping helps in the production of planktons which serves as a supplementary food for the fish

You can culture maggot using that. I did it years back on a small scale. Though very messy and all.
