Abdullahi Ganduje, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says there is nothing wrong with having a one-party system in Nigeria.

Ganduje spoke on Friday after leading a delegation of three senators from Kebbi state to meet with President Bola Tinubu.

The three senators – Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi and Garba Maidoki – on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declared their intention to the APC.

Reacting to whether the wave of defection of opposition politicians to the ruling APC would not slide Nigeria into a one-party state, Ganduje cited China as an example of a working one-party state.

“We came here so that Mr President can bless this resolution, and Mr President has graciously blessed this resolution. On Tuesday, I urge you to go and see what will happen in the chambers,” he said.

“If a one-party state is a wish and blessing to Nigeria… a one-party state is not by force.

“One party’s state is by negotiation, and it is by other political parties seeing the effect of the positive governance of our party.

“If they decide to come to our party willingly, I think there is nothing wrong with that.

“You know they say too many cooks spoil the soup — too many political parties spoil governance.

“China is one of the strongest countries in the world, and it’s a one-party system. We are not saying we are working for a one-party system, but if that is the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that.”

A one party state under Tinubu is not different from a government under one military rule under Abacha.


The party is run by one leader and whatever the one leader decides in the party becomes law and is greater than the constitution and the will of the people, for example the Lagos state house of assembly saga with Obasa.

That is what Tinubu wants to replicate in Nigeria, well we warned them long before about Tinubu, some people didn't listen.

A one-party system might work for China, but Nigeria is a different terrain entirely because we thrive on diversity and the balance of opposing views. Democracy is about options, ability, and healthy competition. If every dissenting voice s the ruling party, who will question excesses or check abuse of power?
What’s missing isn't more defectors, it’s stronger institutions and performance based politics.
Nigeria doesn’t need fewer parties, what we need are parties that actually serve the people not just switch sides for survival of stomach infrastructure.

Opposition parties in Nigeria are just full of bunch of lazy people. What they all want is already made cake. They don't want to work for the cake.

That one party state is a pipe dream. Nigeria has gone beyond that. Even though it doesn't look as if we are growing, but definitely our democracy is growing.
PDP did worse than this, but they only lasted 16 years, we never know they could quickly fall like pack of cards like that.
2023 election was a four horse race, i.e four formidable candidates, so, it's just a matter of time APC will also PDP in our national books of history. Infact, I don't see APC again after Pa Tinubu regime.
So, it may look like it for now, but, it's not really what they are thinking.

Additionally, while China is known for its harsh anti-corruption measures, including life imprisonment or even the death penalty for corrupt officials, Nigeria’s anti-corruption system relies on constitutional processes, judicial oversight, and independent institutions like the EFCC and IC. While enforcement in Nigeria may be slower or less severe, it operates within the bounds of rule of law and due process.

In short, Nigeria and China operate under fundamentally different political systems, legal frameworks, and societal expectations. It's important to recognize these distinctions rather than draw direct comparisons that ignore context
