The Birth Of GSM In Nigeria: Who Made The First Call? (28588 Views)
donbenie(m): 10:39pm On May 07 |
lexy2014:GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) originated in Europe in the early 1980s as a standardized pan-European digital mobile cellular radio system. It was first deployed in Finland,1991. Gradually rolled across the world. Came to Nigeria in the early 2000s. So, what exactly is your question about? 3 Likes 1 Share |

lexy2014:Where in my write up did I say that? Which part of emerging technology do you not understand? It first started in 1991 in Finland and gradually got to other parts of the world within about a 10 year period. Of course Africa is always the last to get such luxuries. |

donbenie: that is not what I asked you. are you saying that it was in 2001 that GSM technology was invented? are you saying that there was no evidence of GSM technology anywhere in the world before 2001? |

happney65: GSM isn't so popular in the USA,they are majorly on CDMA band, that's why many US phones don't work here........ Nigeria was the first country to go full wireless and became a cases study for even the advanced countries as many thought it wasn't possible that we were going to crash soonest but here we are 25 years later. |

omonnakoda: I really don’t know what Obj did to some of you to warrant the envy. Mobile phones have been around since the late 80’s to 1990’s. Obj wasn’t just the president in power when mobile telecommunications was rolled out but it was the idea of his istration to privatize a sector that was tied with inefficiency and corruption to open up the economy. He planned to do same for power after his success with telecommunications but unfortunately couldn’t succeed. If you’re old enough you will only rich uncles and offices had Nitel line and people had given up on telecommunications as a dream despite it being available in western countries just like 24/7 electricity today. The success in Nigeria and resulting effects on our GDP encouraged other African countries to adopt the script and successfully roll out GSM in their countries which started a continental revolution. If it’s so easy then why can’t the present government recreate same success in one sector? After all electricity has been around since the 1920’s. Please put some respect on Obj’s name and don’t downplay his role. |

We had mobile multilinks, mobitel, intercelullar and others before GSM technology. There was cellular 090 too.I occassionally using the cloned one owned by a neighbour to make urgent calls when Nitel piers, cabinet, underground and other technical wahala show face. Nitel technicians and extortion were 5&6. |
