Exam Malpractice is a major Factor.

The cheat to the internal exams in their secondary schools. Cheat to write WAEC and make 5 "A's and 4 B's.

They get to JAMB and can't cheat. The real statistics appear.

I have been singing it that Exam Malpractice is the Malady of our Educational System. And Until we get our Educational System right, we can't get Nigeria on the right track.

They don't read at all. These generation don't read. I told my alma mater not to invest in library renovations because these youth don't read. It will be better u invest such money in skills lab. U know u are adding value. They are not slow or patient to read anything. U can visit schools and see for yourself.quote author=iwaeda post=135273564]Bad preparation by students, JAMB did not adequately prepared, network, CBT centers are not well equipped. grin grin grin[/quote]

We're returning to the 90s and 2000s era. In my time, where would a candidate score 300 in jamb? Or A1 all through in waec? You must be extremely brilliant, reading all the time to achieve this. Many of us in that era even had to combine waec results to gain ission. Some universities will state in the brochure that they accept 6 credits in 2 sitting and 5 credit es in one sitting. To make a complete English and maths in waec wasn't so common then.

What happens nowadays? A candidate would score A1 parallel in waec and 300 in jamb. Then by the time he or she's in school, she won't be able to defend it. That has to stop.

However, I don't believe the measure put into this year's exam by jamb caused the mass failure. Investigation needs to be carried out and without bias.

They read, but wrong things, social media. I have to take away all laptops from children, except for school works, they love YouTube. JAMB too didn't measured up, how can you set time for 6:30am, no UPS, no inverter. grin grin grin angry

My take:

1. CBT exams in an environment where most schools lack adequate ICT staff and facilities; some students' first exposure to computer na during JAMP prep.

2. Lost of distractions abound. In my time, the internet was expensive to access. Today, internet wey supposed be blessing, people don dey take am do rubbish.

3. The school-na-scam narrative trickling down to young people.

4. Get rich early. Young people only define success in of money, so they go into all sorts of criminal activities instead of pursuing relevant education.

5. Substitute for hardwork. Why work hard when Mr. A can achieve this with no education? Why work hard when my teachers are all broke?

6. Laziness. I go read tomorrow... I go read tonight.... I go officially start prep next month.

7. ICT glitches during the exams

8. Parents and guardians not creating enabling study environments at home. Keeping candidates busy all the time with house chores, trading activities, child caring, etc. At the end of the day, the child is dead tired, and can only sleep....better sleep sef fit no come as night messages fit follow.

9. Lack of good mentorship.

10. Being in the wrong field. Some students in the sciences have no business being there. Probably forced there by parents or peer influence.

To Add

When I read this minister's statement yesterday, I was disappointed. Instead of taking a closer look at the issue, the man opted for the easiest (lazy) explanation. A better approach would have been to look at this issue closely...to develop adequate hypotheses, conduct a survey of students, parents, and teachers, do some statistical analysis, and come up with an evidence-based reason.

So disappointing the kind of leaders we have around here.

Easier to criticize, but cannot give solutions, in ur solutions, I'm just reading grammar and absolutely nothing to take out from it.

I have bolded ur jargon with no solution, you can re-read it and see it yourself. Before you condemn someone solutions/opinions make sure you have practicable and better solutions in place.

Do the needful on logistics..students can't wake up by 5:30 rushing to meet up at their exams by 6:30am..while majority are not computer literate so dealing with that pressure is enough

But I can't rule the fact out that we are living in generation of social media distractions..content everywhere..children handling phones to watch nonsense instead of reading

1. There's no motivation to excel. They look at the lives of their parents who wrote JAMB, compared it with certificate-less drug dealers in power and don't want to end up like their parents.

For every child that fails JAMB, there are at least 10 failing adults to be held responsible (we all are part of this system). We must take the blame. Our individual and collective failures are a demotivating factor for these kids to excel. You're teaching them Physics, but can't generate electricity πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ How dem want take believe your nonsense, let alone get them to ?

You're a parent. You wrote JAMB and ed, but you're struggling to pay school fees (the kids know better. They appreciate your struggle, but nope, no way they're taking your path).

2. Poor teaching and learning method. Let's face the fact, majority of our teachers today never wanted/planned to be teachers. Many are in it for survival. The students know how much their teachers are paid and don't see any motivation. The age of "do as I say" is long gone.

3. Stress and hunger: Believe it or not, there's a correlation between hunger and academic failure. Some of these students have not tasted egg and milk since the Buhari era. How brain wan take develop?? Beyond genes, wellbeing/healthy living also plays a role.

4. We are in the age of content and attention. For many of them, their role models are the likes of VDM and co. You have to give them a good reason why their academic pursuit will get them the kind of attention VDM gets on a daily basis.

Jargon, how? Isn't what you bolded a solution I proposed? Is asking the government to conduct a study on the matter not a solution?

Wow.

Why the micro approach to this malady?

Has there ever been mass success in JAMB?

Please I wrote jamb top, even though I failed the first sittings, but our time was not about seriousness not waiting for free expo or doing dirty online.

This is the least factor. There are millions whose exams fell in 10am - 3pm but they still failed, secondly CBT wasn't' introduced today so any child who at this age isn't computer literate has his or herself to blame.

Because students know they can get ission with less than 200 marks
chinchum(m): 1:35pm On May 07
The rate of about 25% scoring 200 and above is one of the highest in the history of Jamb. Anyone with a contrary stat should provide it. It is not necessarily different from what obtained in the last decade.
We like to sensationalise data as it suits us in Nigeria.

In yr 2000 , only 8% of JAMB candidates scored above 200. This stat is for those who are quick to label children of nowadays as dumb with an imaginary but false belief that 20-30 years ago, jamb candidates were better.

The highest score in JAMB late 90's and very early 2000s was circa 270-280's

It is understandable that the factors contributing to mass failure of this kind can be multi-factorial;

-1). Student. Natural Illness, Fatigue, Mental laziness, Effects of Digital Technology( phones, Internet etc ).
-2). Parental: Preference of courses which the students does not have natural endowments, forcing wards to choose tertiary institutions that are highly competitive etc
-3). Exam Bodies. Examination logistics( timing, exam centers, transportation issues, malfunctioning CBT computers,
-4). Miscellaneous. Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome,
Teens have unlimited to social media without parental guide.

Prayers without hardwork was the reason for the mass failure.Did we not see their parents turned the exams premises to prayer and praising God ground during the exams?
Parents should teach their children hardwork instead of prayers that solve nothing.Africans be wise!
