Sometimes people in NL need to be smart and apply deductive reasoning. The traditional ruler didn't imply from his statement that acquisition meant they bought the land. It could clearly mean a land grab, these areas could mean Bush areas that these guys settled in. Tell me where in this our Nigeria did herdsmen acquire land through purchase?

ribbit: If only they buy the lands without ulterior motives. It's actually a jihad, we all know! Unfortunately, you'll pretend like it's not. The plan of Uthman Danfodiyo is still very much alive. Igbos buy lands in the North, and West... But they don't claim to be indigenes of those places. These fulanis are coming to become indigenes; it's the same plan as Ruga, but with different fundings 1 Like |

agulion: But you proudly buy lands from other tribes and is even threatening Yorubas with domination since they are so poor , you will outprice the indigenes and soon will displace the yorubas in their cities Now you have the Fulanis planning exactly the same thing you plan against the yourbas against you.....you begin to cry. What took those Fulani elites so long, I thought they would have been doing this surreptitiously since like a decade ago, or are they not?..... finding an igboman that will betray his tribe for a few bucks should be easy You will be shocked to realize that while you people are busy trying to take over yorubaland, Fulanis have managed to buy up what little good land you have and leave you to fight over the remaining gully erosion ravaged enclave 3 Likes |

Ewedegubbler: Unfortunately, they don't play by the rules. Imagine 30 of them come to a community... 1 man, 4 wives. 40 children (30 men, at lest 200-300 wives; 2,000-5,000 children). Only one generation!!! Next Generation... 200men, 2,000-4,000 wives; 20k - 50k children! Are there any communities in the East or West that procreate like this? What happens after 5 generations? Can the indigenes deny these children born here their own rights as indigenes? Can you stop them from voting? It's only a matter of time, and they are the real indigenes. In Afikpo, it's common to hear people speaking Hausa; I mean, some of these people bear names like Ada, Chidi, etc! They're actually Hausa/Fulani; same with Ilorin. Adesina, Bukola... And they are fulanis! |

RandomFellow:and what ulterior motive than to ranch for the herdemen? You are complaining that they are grazing people's land, but now that they want to buy the land, you are still complaining.. Igbos literally want eliminate indengenship and they meddle heavily on south west politics. What ulterior motive is worse than that? 1 Like |

You won't allow them stay Free! You won't allow them stay on lease! You won't allow them buy and stay! You won't allow government to buy and give them! But you are all over AREWA ( Abuja, Kano, Kaduna etc) developing lands in their part of the country. What kind of a useless and irresponsible tribe are you people? 1 Like |

Nothing wrong if deals were done above board and papers are intact. That is best practice. However on the issue of people moving around with arms, that is another matter. Because that is illegal and that is where structure lets us down. I was watching an episode of Lonestar on tv last night about the activities of law enforcement in Texas concerning everything from wildlife protection to petty crimes. You can clearly see a State that is on top of the security of it's lands, it's natural resources and it's people. Citations were given for illegal tresing, unauthorized fishing (you need a license to fish on state land) and uned vehicles. Why can't we be so organized at local government and state levels by a simple act of law to establish state and local government police then these herders can be protected by law (so they don't have to bear illegal arms) and by the same law their activities checked so they cannot continue taking laws into their own hands. It is a simple act of addressing these pressing, intractable issues by structure. The density of cattle in Texas is approximately 17.5 heads per square kilometers while that of Nigeria is approximately 22.5 heads of cattle per square kilometers. Isn't it clear enough that we need a proper structure to take care of the needs of agriculture, the land and the people. May the Nigerian citizen wake up and step out of the dark age by thinking through challenges to clear and progressive solutions. |

On reading a number of responses I can see there is another angle to this, a social angle and the issues about land and ownership rights and the tasking issue of indigenization. These are political issues for which governments formed. These are issues we should be speaking about as the backbone of our democracy, that is the restructuring of the country to ensure the concerns of all citizens are addressed. But what is the basis of our elections..... money. The people ignore what really matters and trade their franchise for a morsel whereas it is an opportunity to get governments attention to building proper structures to guarantee social justice. And there are many examples around the world to address all manner of issues including in Nigeria. Some examples. You can have electoral colleges to guarantee fair representation to nullify the effect of a domineering demographic just like the US. You can have state laws to control everything from business to personal health and wellbeing including population growth and permitted densities. In Nigeria some states in the north donot permit the sale of certain products and I have not heard of any challenge lodged with the courts. So there is a lot local authorities can do under the influence of the voting public to address any concern. It is only a matter of awareness of how things work and testing the legal limits. |
