The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has criticised recent remarks made by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, on self-defence, adding that such an act is capable of causing anarchy in the country.

It will be recalled that Danjuma had called on Nigerians to take matters into their own hands and defend themselves in response to growing insecurity.

In an interview granted while speaking on Channels Television on Monday, and anchored in Kano, the Governor cautioned that such a statement could lead to lawlessness.

However, he acknowledged Danjuma’s stature as a senior security figure, stating, “He (Danjuma) is a very senior security person and should be respected. However, suggesting that citizens should defend themselves could incite anarchy. His words need to be carefully analysed.”

Governor Namadi then emphasised that the government is actively working to enhance the country’s security framework.

Buttressing his view, the Governor cited his state as an example, highlighting how community engagement and strategic planning have contributed to reducing violence.

Since we took office, we’ve employed various strategies, brought in experts, and engaged traditional rulers. We’ve also set up committees to facilitate communication with the people,” he said.

He further stated, “Now, the community understands that violence is not the answer. We are not at a point where citizens need to defend themselves.”

He also expressed strong for the establishment of a State Police, describing it as a feasible solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.

Governor Namadi disclosed, “The concept of State Police is still very much alive. Several states have shown interest, and discussions are ongoing at the National Economic Council. I believe it will eventually be implemented.”

It will be recalled that General Danjuma, speaking at a public event in Takum, Taraba State, on Saturday, had urged Nigerians to defend themselves against bandits and criminals, warning that it is no longer realistic to rely solely on the government for protection.

“The warning I gave some years ago still holds true today. Nigerians must rise and defend themselves,” Danjuma declared, referring to his earlier cautions. “We cannot continue to stand by as bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs massacre our people unchecked,” he added.

There's anarchy already. Where villagers are routinely massacred and their land taken over can only be described as a state of anarchy.
Self defense is perfectly legal and I agree with Gen. Danjuma.

No one should have the Monopoly of violence in this country every state in this country should have boundary patrol or police heavily armed to the teeth that check who comes into and out of their state this will eliminate any form of invasion in this country

There is already enough anarchy in the land with lives being lost @ will with the attendant failure or refusal of the many batteries of security agencies to act. Self defense is a right and not an obligation. Govt have failed woefully. People must defend themselves.

Meanwhile this governor goes about with armed-to-the-teeth security details for his own and family protection while hapless citizens are being killed unabatingly.

Security agents have fallen short of securing the lives and properties of common man,therefore,self-defense is not a crime in this context.

Self defense is a statement to let the government know that they have failed.

If the president is reasonable enough , he should go after the owners of herds that died after eating contaminated farm produce of a farmer in plateau and Benue state. Such people are the major sponsors of insecurities in the state alongside their herders union.

Many people are angry at the plateau state governor for saying they are investigating the poisoning of herds of cow that entered a farm and ate the farm produce resulting to death of some cows.

A thorough lesson on some few of them will either bring calm or escalate the crisis.

If calm, good for all.
If crisis, we would know who we are fighting.
It would be a win win.

This threat by the governor is a form of taqqiya that they use against politicians who are ignorant of the power they possess.

They can round up every possible threat and return them to Jigawa let the governor resettle them. Then there won't be any insecurities to even talk of self defense.

My opinion.

Fulani herdsmen killing spree is already anarchy. Defend yourselves on a low key, the government will do nothing about it no matter who the president is, this is well proven by Buhari and Tinubu.

People in troubled areas, your life is sacrosanct and self-defence is 100% permitted by even the Nigerian Constitution. You should do what is best for the sanctity of your life because some people speak from the comfort of 100 security men including Nigerian Army. Nigerian Police, SSS/DSS and the likes, telling you not to exercise your full rights as guranteed both globally and in Nigeria.

Article 2 of the UDHR provides that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

Article 6 of the ICR provides that everyone has an inherent right to life. The right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life.

Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and People’s rights provides that Human rights are inviolable. Every human being shall be entitled to respect for his life and the integrity of his person. No one may be arbitrarily deprived of his right.

Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 provides that Every person has a right to life, and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life.

Section 33(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 provides that A person shall not be regarded as having deprived another of his life if he fatally injures another as a result of or the defence of himself or any person from unlawful violence or for the defence of property.

So says a Fulani governor whose people are the major reason for the insecurity and under-development pervading Nigeria today, blood is thicker than water, you won't expect other Nigerians to defend themselves against attacks from his people angry embarassed

Mr governor you are talking nonsense because self defence lead to peace not anarchy.
If the attacker knows that the people have what it takes to defend themselves they will think twice. Northerns are the problem to this country. The annoying thing is that the Southern governors are quiet because they have protection. God will judge everybody some day.

When I was in School, armed robbers robbed us one Tuesday, they broke our windows and made a hole through the fence. We heard information they would come back, we all defended ourselves

They came back on Friday, all the boys and girls in the lodge we were all carrying bottles and sticks and rod telling them if Dem born their papa well make them break enter.

Moral was high that night. We drag am reach 4:30 a.m.

The next morning other occupants in the next compound started hailing us.

If not, girls would be rapped, guys would be robbed, people might even get killed.

I learned lesson that day. That was 2011 year 3

Better listen to T Y Danjuma, than this eye-service Gov Umar.

But truth is, Nigeria is paying for the crime against humanity they committed against Biafrans. Gowon, T Y Danjuma and others never knew a day like this will ever come.

Never evil because its being done to your neighbor, tomorrow might be your turn.

Chai, this world is truly deep😥
