The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN has warned about the danger of giving political interpretations to judicial matters.

Fagbemi spoke shortly after the presentation of a book: “Tribulations and Trophies, Bola Ajibola in His Own Words!” in Lagos on Thursday.

He also urged stakeholders to do away with emotion and rely on the Constitution in seeking answers to legal questions.

The book, which is an autobiography of the late Ajibola, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, chronicled the life and times of the former Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague.

Ajibola was the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president when military President Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida appointed him AGF in 1985.

He was also the founder of Crescent University in Abeokuta.

Ajibola died on April 8, 2023, aged 89.

Reflecting on the emergency rule in Rivers State, Fagbemi said he had maintained neutrality on the subject because it is a matter of litigation.

He noted that the appointment of iral Ibok-Ete Ibas as of Rivers generated diverse views and cautioned against unnecessary comments.

He said, “When issues like this come up, people should go and read very well and get themselves familiar with what the law says. It’s not a matter of sentiment or emotions, but a matter of basic facts on ground.

“Nigerians should stop interpreting the law based on political partisanship, but let’s stick to the law. You’ll see that I’ve avoided taking sides on any issue, though I’m part of the government. I know that this matter has been subjected to judicial scrutiny, and we should allow the court to make its decision one way or the other.

People should avoid making unnecessary comments. Since we have subjected the matter to court interpretation, let’s wait for the judiciary to make its pronouncement.”

Fagbemi described Ajibola as a reformer and an achiever, stressing, “He was a man of sterling qualities and impeccable character and integrity, who was always speaking the truth.

“In the Ministry of Justice, the records are there. He did so much in of law reforms, in establishment of critical agencies and advising the authorities at critical times. Every lawyer should strive to emulate this great man who did so much in Nigeria and beyond.”

The dignitaries present at the event were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, among others.

'Judiciary in Nigeria have been made a laughing stock....politicians have succeeded in messing it up,now it is open for the highest bidder.
The supreme court that was once revered,it was the last hope of the masses,a custodian of hope,a court of original jurisdiction, court of last resort, the realm where precedents are set.
Today,it is now history, political considerations, money and other selfish interests hold sway. The past great justices of the supreme court of Nigeria like Justice Chukwudifu Oputa,Justice Niki Tobi, justice sir Udo Udoma, justice A.G Karibi Whyte, justice Ephraim Akpata,Justice Lious Mbanefo, justice Mohammed Bello will all be turning in their graves.

So how would you interpret a judgement by a member of an election tribunal using the below words without attaching a political connotation?

''The second respondent cannot ‘go lo lo lo lo’ and ‘buga won’ as the duly elected governor of Osun state in the election conducted on the 16th day of July, 2022' ... grin

What should we then say in. a situation where the matter of defection of 27 lawmakers was not before the supreme Court yet the court made a pronouncement on it. Or what should the people day when a sole defy court orders and goes ahead to spend money not budgetted for. He even appointed sole s to ister local governments areas.

You'd see graduates of Animal husbandry, phone charger sellers, hairdressers, hotel attendants, interpreting the law under the guise of being a lawyer on social media.

When judgements stops being political we can probably think about it. Is been awhile we heard from the like of Aregbesola, Rochas and co, hopefully when they make intentions known soon we won't have cases against them?

Fixed.

See who is talking about political interpretations of judgements. An AGF who couldn't advise the president about the illegality of removing an elected governor is talking about political interpretations of judgements. Wonders shall never cease!

What is political about that...at worst it is inappropriate and unbecoming, but you can't read a political bias into such an empty statement. Unless you are already desperate to find one.
