A heartbreaking tragedy has sparked outrage online after a Nigerian man shared the devastating story of how he lost his pregnant wife and unborn child due to alleged medical negligence and the demand for an upfront payment before treatment. In two emotional clips making rounds on social media, the grieving husband is seen cradling his lifeless wife while recounting the harrowing experience.
According to him, they rushed to a private hospital in urgent need of care, but were turned away because they couldn’t immediately pay a ₦500,000 deposit.

Despite his pleas for the hospital to begin treatment while he sourced for funds, they allegedly refused and referred them to a general hospital far away in Epe, Lagos.Sadly, his wife ed away before they could reach the second facility.“They watched her die,” the husband said tearfully. “I begged them, but they drove us out like they didn’t care. How can life be so cheap?”The incident has triggered widespread anger on social media, with many calling for urgent reforms in the healthcare system and stronger regulations on emergency care. Nigerians are demanding ability and justice as they question how a medical institution could allegedly prioritize money over saving lives.

Pregnancy is a 9-month gig during which those who are intentional would have not only prepared themselves for that final emergency to come but also done all necessary to ensure they are prepared as far as the bill to come. undecided

This here is a sad story indeed, but I can't really fault the hospital for choosing to protect its bottom line either. undecided

Name-checkers will first check the man's tribe and see if it can be used in any way to discourage voters from voting certain political party/candidate in the future. Just watch.
N500,000 is les than $320 dollar, so this is a sad death for a country where billions is used to stone devil in another continent and where schools are underfunded. That's like hajj pap n akara allowance for one malam in holy area abi na land.
Nigerians too, if a philanthropist steps up and start "showing" himself, they will frustrate such effort.

be talking like deranged spiritualist there. There should be health insurance for uncovered citizens in emergency.
We are fond of misusing the idea of intervention or emergency in Nigeria. They are for cases like these where the couple can't easily replace what is at stake - life.

i saw this heartbreaking video on twitter today.. mehn naija is a horrible country but u won't blame the hospital.. they must have gotten their finger bitten before that made them harden their heart. Must u go to private hospital? There are even local yoruba women that give birth to babies for low income families. For them to request initial 500k deposit means its an expensive hospital. didn't she go for ante-natal? what happen to the hospital she was using all these while?

In as much as this is a sad incidence, but the hospital isn't a charity organisation too... Even government hospitals charge, might not be much but they charge....

I won't blame the guy too, maybe he prepared but wasn't expecting something much as this... Poverty is really bad, may God bless all legitimately hustling guy out there... Money can help avoid a lot of calamities...

I saw the news somewhere else and was surprised at the mortuary looking hospital that requested 500k deposit. To do what exactly?

I thought they ed a law against this deposit before attending to emergencies?

Pregnancy can go either way in seconds.
One has to be very alert and close to a trusted hospital.

If anyone tells u Nigeria is getting better, take them to a govt hospital for just one day and let them experience first hand what's going on there.
See Nigerians see and treat other Nigerians as animals.
May Nigeria not happen to me and my family. Amen

This man is a clown. If he was the one, would he accept to give someone goods on credit or work for someone on credit and to get paid later? he should be ashamed of himself rather than looking for cheap pity. Pregnancy is not an Emergency, you don't just get pregnant. it is something that is planned for, even if a woman gets pregnant, She still has 9months. this man is clearly a mistake, he took the life of his wife all by himself for his lack of decision making or leadership experience in his marriage. His negligence should not be frowned from. he killed his wife by his hands. if this was an actual emergency like a gunshot, accident etc, then I would feel a bit more sad and remorseful, but pregnancy is never ever an Emergency.

This is such a sad story.

May she rest in peace

Emotions aside, hospital is just like every business place where you pay for every goods or service rendered. But 500k?

Goodness me

I believe there is an ample time for everyone or family to prepare for pregnancy.

Besides a wise person should have a set aside hospital closer in the time of delivery.

Be it government or private. This should be known as test are been done during the 9 months.

This
Death is
Avoidable though
The hospital should have allowed for a partial payment though.

My 2 cents

Wicked people everywhere. What happens to the Oath they swore, to always protect lives? They chose money over mother and unborn child lives! The wickedness of some politicians we condemn is nothing compared to some people with little power. What goes around will definitely visit (come) around for them

Always plan and prepare ahead in case of eventualities, not when kasala burst will you start pointing fingers, they had a whole 9 months to prepare for the birth, why blame a hospital that is protecting itself money-wise? For them to insist on payment first, that means they must have been scammed by patients who ran away without paying for treatments, so I do not blame them.

Rip.

If there's a law to punish hospitals for rejecting emergency patients before payment, there should also be a law to pay the hospital in case the emergency patient refuses to pay, or is unable to pay after treatment.

Don't blame the hospital. Don't blame the patient.
Blame the people ruling you. Blame the poor health insurance coverage.

Edit: for those saying 9 months is enough to prepare, emergency can happen anywhere at anytime and you may not be close to your own main hospital where you ed. The stupidity of Nigerians is that they can't see that what happened to this man can happen to you or anyone close to you. Imagine having millions in your but you suddenly go unconscious somewhere far away from home, na so so hospitals go dey reject you until you die (God forbid) because they can't access your . But that's the reality of the system. You think it can't be you or someone close until it happens.

Let's collectively speak up for change now.

Before you judge the hospital, read this lengthy post from Dr.PenKing.

Note that the normal average cost of childbirth runs into thousands of dollars in developed countries.

An average Nigerian is one health emergency away from bankruptcy. Stroke gulped 6 million in 4 days from a friends family through cranial surgery and consultancy fees. Having such funds readily available was the difference between life and death of their father.

Get covered by one form of health insurance or another today.

Tight corner due to experiences in the past. I managed a little private practice in a community in Ekiti state sometime in 2021. When I started, I was so selfless and would manage every case first and ask for money before discharge. Most times people paid back my kindness with wickedness.

In a particular quite interesting case , a 19 year old girl had used local methods to carry out an abortion and there were complications. She was rushed in unconscious, with fever of 41 degrees Celsius, Heart rate of 155bpm, respiratory rate of 32c/m. iv Rocephin was one of the antibiotics we knew would save her life. The hospital pharmacy did not have it and I prescribed for them to buy outside. When they went to check the price they realized they could not afford it. Her mother wailed like a child. Rocephin (an apex brand of Ceftriaxone) is one of the very expensive antibiotics in Nigeria. I could not stand seeing her die because of money so I dipped my hand inside my pocket and gave her mom money to go buy the antibiotics. I spent 121 000 Naira in total, I borrowed part of the money, hoping I would get it back when she became well.

Day after day, after filing in vials and vials of Rocephin, Slowly she came out of her coma and her symptoms started resolving. Everyone was happy. I feel fulfilled

I came to work one morning to meet the most rude shock of my life. Itunu had disappeared from the hospital with her mother, without paying the hospital bills or refunding the money I borrowed to buy antibiotics for her.

At that point I made a very difficult decision for the rest of my stay there, not to ever leave the Doctor’s lodge until the nurses confirmed that the patient had made a deposit and never to dip my hands in my pocket again. Of course people called me a heartless and wicked Doctor, but they had no idea about the experiences that brought me there .

There is a solution to all this. This is another opportunity to let everyone know that there is something called Health Insurance in Nigeria and it is very active and efffectjve . There are many HMO (Health Management Organization) which you and take a token monthly or yearly so that anytime you have a medical emergency, hospitals will attend to you and you won’t have to pay. There are different plans for different socio-economic classes. Please don’t wait until you have emergencies before you start thinking about your health. You that is reading this, have you ed with an HMO?
