Nwosu should face his judgment before God for his conspiracy and deliberate move to truncate the fairest and most free election in June 12, 1993.

Here lies Prof. Humphrey Nwosu—a man who laid low for his country, stood firm in the face of danger, and sacrificed everything for a nation that repaid him with betrayal. Denied honor, cast aside for his tribe, yet his legacy outlives their rejection. Rest in power.

‘ABACHA SCREAMED AT ME, IBB TOLD ME I WAS ON MY OWN’

Nwosu added that Sani Abacha, the chief of defence staff who seized power less than three months after IBB “stepped aside”, also barked at him over the announcement of the results.

“The military then said a committee headed by Abacha should find a solution to the problem. Abacha was in that committee, Murtala Nyako, Aliyu Gusau and David Mark were also in that committee. Then, another sub-committee was created,” he said.

“I told them that there was nothing to meet about that; the law is clear because an election has been conducted and results have been collated, and the only one remaining was that of Taraba, and we have come along with it.

“I told them to allow us to complete the exercise. Abacha screamed at me when he heard this. He told me who do I think I was. He said I was not a member of the national security council and that I went ahead and held an election even after the court had declared it illegal.

“In fact, I was called into a meeting by the national defence and security council and asked if I would release the result without informing the military body. I replied: ‘That is the law. There was no provision for the highest ruling military body to vet the result. The law says the results should be announced at ward, local, state and, finally, headquarters level’.

“I and my national commissioners were summoned to Aso Rock, and Babangida asked what the NEC’s position was on the election. We answered that the NEC should be allowed to conclude the election and announce the result and that we would challenge the letter served by the commissioner of police halting the release of election results. Then Babangida told us, ‘You people are on your own’.

“Then we went to court. The attorney general of the federation should have championed our position, but he did not. It was Bukhari Bello, director of NEC’s Lagos services, who went to the Kaduna court of appeal and filed the papers.” Nwosu added that the military dissolved NEC on June 23 to prevent the court from certifying results of the poll.

“We submitted all the results, including that of Taraba, showing that Abiola won the election. Abiola was represented by K Ajayi, and Tofa was also represented. The court held its first sitting, and Justice Okey Achike was the chairman,” he said.

“He was ready to conclude, and he ordered the Abuja high court to submit all matters relating to the election. All the results were submitted to his court for accelerated hearing and decision [slated] for June 25, 1993.

“When you submit something to the court, it becomes a public document, is it not? All the results were submitted to the court headed by Okey Achike, showing that Abiola won. Abiola knew. When this was to be done on June 25, the military quickly dissolved my commission on June 23.

“I am saying for public record that Abiola won the June 12 election. In all the documents that we submitted, as far back as June 20, 1993.”

Aareonakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, has thrown his weight behind clamour in some quarters that former Chairman, National Electoral Commission (NEC), the Late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, be immortalised.

Adams argued that the late electoral commission boss deserved such recognition, given his role in delivering June 12, 1993 Presidential election, which is adjudged globally as the freest and fairest election conducted in Nigeria’s history.

It would be recalled that the Senate for the second term rejected a motion seeking to immortalise the Late Nwosu as the parliament only agreed to honour his death by observing a minute’s silence and extending condolences to his family.

The Yoruba generalissimo gave this position in a statement issued by his office, a copy of which was made available to TheScrutinyNG on Friday.

He said the then NEC “through having a sincere chairman like Humphrey Nwosu” conducted free and fair election that gave the Late Chief MKO Abiola “the mandate that the Nigerian government then did not install him as president.”

According to Iba Adams, the respect and the glory that Abiola is having today long after his ing is as a result of the honesty displayed by the Prof. Nwosu and the products that worked with him that made it happen, saying that if Abiola could be honoured by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, so also Nwosu deserved to be immortalised as well.

The Yoruba generalissimo said the Federal Government should at least ensure that a monument be named after the Late Prof Nwosu as “a good precedence for other INEC chairmen to be honest when they were being given the position on the basis of organizing elections in Nigeria.”

“It is very important that Prof. Humphrey Nwosu should be recognized, the genesis of having a free and fair or the foundation of having a free and fair June 12, 1993 elections was through having a sincere NEC chairman like Humphrey Nwosu. Humphrey Nwosu conducted free and fair election that gave Aare MKO Abiola the mandate that the Nigerian government then did not install him as president”.

“And the respect and the glory that Aare MKO Abiola is having today is as a result of the honesty displayed by the then NEC chairman and the products that worked with him that made it happen.

“So if Abiola can be honoured by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, so definitely Humphrey Nwosu has to be immortalised. At least, there should be a monument that they should name after him so that it can be a good precedence for other INEC chairmen to be honest when they were being given the position on the basis of organizing elections in Nigeria,” Iba Adams said.

Adams, therefore, urged the National Assembly to immortalise Nwosu, saying that this became imperative if it wanted a free, fair and credible election in the country.

He said the National Assembly should also make this possible if it wanted people in important positions in the country “to uphold credibility,” describing the Late Nwosu as a great man.

The Yoruba generalissimo, while noting that Nwosu later wrote a book after the election was annulled, to present the true story about the whole incident, urged that nothing must be done to deny him the honour he deserved, warning that should such be done, “his spirit will not be happy with Nigeria.”

This was just as he equally noted that it would amount to selfishness on the side of Yoruba people not to move to immortalise the Late Nwosu, recalling that many Igbo ed the Late Abiola to be immortalised.

Besides, he said countless Igbo people always participated in June 12 programmes, where one of the resolutions remained “that Abiola should be immortalised.”

“For any Yoruba to oppose Prof. Humphrey Nwosu from being immortalised, such would amount to self centeredness. We have to believe in justice, and what is good for the goose is also good for the gander,” he said.

He did his best on the job despite the risks to his life and family. Those asking why he didn't didn't announce the results should go and argue and fight with armed soldiers and see the outcome

Nigeria is the only country in the world where people who rig elections (Tinubu) are celebrated as heroes while the people who conducted the freest and fairest elections are considered as villains (Nwosu)

In Nigeria, the person who conducted, supervised, and collated a smooth, free, and fair elections is not worthy of honor, while the person who annulled the same elections is celebrated and even rewarded with N16b.

Yet you say something is not fundamentally wrong with this geographical entity called Nigeria.

Instead of SE senators asking the senate to redraw the gas master plan to circulate gas across the 5 states of the region, they are more interested in a man who has left the world and has gone to stand before his maker.

The senate is useless and should be scrapped. The house of reps is enough! Young people should be pushing for that.
