Senator Adams Oshiomhole has opposed any posthumous recognition for the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), arguing that he failed Nigerians by not officially declaring the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Speaking during a Senate debate on Thursday, Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North, accused Nwosu and former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, of deceiving the 18 million Nigerians who voted in the historic election.

“Professor Nwosu and President Babangida fooled the 18 million Nigerians who voted,” Oshiomhole said. “If he was afraid of the gun because we were under a dictatorship, some people might say, ‘Well, there were Nigerians who protested under the gun without minding the consequences.’”

He argued that Nwosu had an opportunity to set the record straight after Nigeria’s return to democracy but failed to do so.

“After the end of Babangida’s tenure, the death of Abiola, and the birth of the new democracy that produced President Obasanjo, I would have expected Nwosu to say—either on his birthday or on a special occasion—‘I couldn’t declare these numbers then, but now, on my record, Abiola won this election. I just wasn’t able to announce it,’” he said.

“He died without confession; he cannot be rewarded,” Oshiomhole added, insisting that history should not be distorted to honor Nwosu.

The debate arose during deliberations on a motion sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), which sought to recognize Nwosu’s role in Nigeria’s democratic transition. However, Oshiomhole maintained that true courage would have meant announcing Abiola’s victory despite the risks, and since Nwosu failed to do so, he should not be celebrated.

He would not have done that under the despot called Babangida. That man and his group were intoxicated by power and very wicked in their days.

Even this Oshiomole was said to have criticized Obasanjo in the morning during his time as NLC leader on a particular day, in the evening of same day Murray Ben Bruce visited Obasanjo and met the two of the drinking and laughing together.
He is now a saint.

But obi people said only Yoruba senators are against it! Any reasonable person will see this move as a gross misplaced of priorities and criminality! His cowardice for not announcing the result led to the arrest of this man, yet those ipob senators wanted him to be immortalised! If he’s that important to them how have they immortalised him in their region? If you pay good attention to these people ,you will realised they are the most hypocritical reprobates in Nigeria! Just wanted to always look for opportunities to forment trouble for no reason! Thank God Una papa na hin be president, he matched Una madness!

It's easy to ask why a civilian like Nwosu did not publicly announce June 12th results against the wishes of Generals with guns

Humphrey Nwosu is No Hero – Let’s Be Honest

Honoring Humphrey Nwosu in the same breath as MKO Abiola is an insult to history.

After Abacha died, MKO Abiola died—a clear signal that forces beyond Nwosu were at play. But in moments where great men stand up to cement their legacy, Nwosu remained silent.

He had one duty: affirm that MKO won fair and square. He didn’t.

Why?
• Fear of IBB? Maybe.
• Pressure from the military? Likely.
• But history only re the bold, not the cautious.

Compare Him to True Heroes

Today, we have INEC commissioners risking their lives to declare results under threats, some even at gunpoint, yet standing firm.
• Some have lost their lives for announcing the rightful winners.
• Nwosu had none of that courage.

Senator Abaribe’s Calls for Immortalization? Nothing to See Here.

He was just a civil servant. He did his job—but nothing extra.
• He didn’t fight for justice.
• He didn’t push against the annulment.
• He didn’t defend the mandate of the people.

Greatness is defined by what you do when it matters most.

Humphrey Nwosu is no hero.
He was just a bureaucrat who stayed within the lines.

Without Nwosu, nobody would be talking about June 12th today

He insisted on conducting that elections when attempts were made to stop it

He went court to have the elections results stand

He tendered the election results in court and they became public documents, which is even how MKO knew he won

Without Nwosu, there would have been no June 12th

Illegality will not be accepted! Senate did well.

Senator Oshio Baba did the right thing. The man was not a hero. Even Peter Obi the only hero he is or has is the beer.

It's like I am missing something in this June 12 issue.

There is no longer a question of whether Abiola won the elections or not. It's been established that he won, from results made available, and he has subsequently been honoured.

Who collated the results that established Abiola as the winner of the elections?

Who was announcing the results before being interrupted by the Commander-in-Chief of the country?

Despite going against the wishes of the military Head of State to conduct the freest and fairest elections, Nwosu isn't appreciated.

Except there is something else I am oblivious about, I smell a tribal connotation in this. This is all because Prof. Nwosu is an Igbo man and nothing more!

The late Nwosu wrote a book about all that transpired during that time and he acknowledged Abiola as the winner of that election.
These guys are too quick to demonize Nwosu even in death,I guess Rufai was right afterall.
I am sure Oshiomole didn’t have the balls to condemn the maradona of their time even after lunching his book.

When will you confess, or you know when you will die

Nobody knows his death time, more reason not to delay repentance and seeking forgiveness from any of our wrong deed. Once we realise it or free from under pressure that silence us, let confess.

I think Oshiomole has point here
