Iceland’s Minister for Children and Education, Ásthildur Lóa Thórsdóttir, has resigned after revelations of her past relationship with a 15-year-old boy when she was 22, resulting in a child.

According to RUV, Thórsdóttir met the boy while working as a counselor for a religious group and gave birth at 23. Icelandic law prohibits adults in authority from engaging in relationships with minors under 18.

Now an adult, the father claims he was denied access to his son despite initially being present. Though his was cut off before the child turned one, he was required to pay child for 18 years. His attempts to gain visitation rights were allegedly blocked by Thórsdóttir.


Following RUV’s report, Thórsdóttir resigned, effective Sunday, but will remain a member of parliament. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir confirmed the resignation, while the People’s Party denied accusations that Thórsdóttir prevented the father’s access.

Largely because our economy and government is based on sharing money.

If a top official resigns in Nigeria, his tribe and state immediately are at a disadvantage...or feel that they are at a disadvantage. That's why for example, Akpabio won't step down to let a neutral investigation of Natasha's allegations be done...it would be considered a disadvantage.

It's not like the West. A political leader in the Western countries has no oil money to share. All they got to do is to find a way to make money for the treasury, so at the end, they fail at that, they resign. Also, such socieites put eyes on morals. The sad thing is that when you have eaten bellefull, you have time to look for moral failures. Here in Nigeria, most of us are hungry, and most of us rely on political leaders for 'daily bread'. Assuming a political leader commits statutory rape , at the end people won't see morality, just that their daily bread is under threat.
