What are the possibilities of a solar going up in flames on a roof is this a common phenomenon or is it unusual? I have plans to get one soon.

1. The design is faulty
2. Safety protection devices against short circuit, overloading and thunderstrike are not installed
However, most landlords do not want their roof to be drilled or pierced, that is the actual reason they do not encourage tenants to install solar on the roof of their houses.

As a landlord I can never allow my tenants install solar on the roof, as a tenant I can't even think about installing solar on our roof.
