What I know is that my grandmother used to put fish inside the netty basket and dry them in the kitchen and I kid you not, those dried fish used to taste better and sweeter.....

My grandma kept smoked fish and other sea foods inside it and put it on fire from time to time, but with no padlock because there was no rat with ten fingers in our house.
