The Federal Government has received the first batch of 2,000 tractors and 9,027 other farming equipment from Belarus as part of efforts to enhance mechanised farming and accelerate food production across the country.

The Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, confirmed the development in a video posted on X.com on Tuesday.

“Nigeria has received the first batch of the 2,000 tractors and 9,027 other farming equipment to be procured in 2025 as President Tinubu’s istration seeks to accelerate food production in the country,” Olusegun wrote.

According to him, the new tractors will be distributed under three key schemes aimed at making mechanised farming more accessible to different segments of the farming community.

“The tractors will be distributed under three key schemes: direct purchase for individuals and organizations seeking to acquire them outright, a leasing scheme that provides affordable access to mechanization without full ownership costs, and a service provider model that establishes tractor service centers in farming communities across the country, allowing smallholder farmers to lease tractors as needed,” he explained.

To ensure sustainability, Olusegun added that the government has procured spare parts alongside the tractors to guarantee maintenance for at least the next four years.

The arrival of the farming equipment aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance food production and reduce the soaring prices of food commodities. In August 2024, President Bola Tinubu announced that Nigeria had placed orders for mechanised farm tools from the United States, Belarus, and Brazil to the agricultural sector.

Similarly, in January 2025, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed that the government had begun receiving the 2,000 tractors ordered from Belarus, reaffirming its commitment to modernizing agriculture and addressing food security challenges.

The initiative is expected to provide smallholder farmers and agribusinesses with greater access to mechanized farming tools, ultimately improving agricultural productivity and stabilising food prices across the country.

They should also receive Ak47s, pump actions, ieds, bullet proofs, otumokpo etc

This is a country where we leaders pretend not to know the actual problems, they will rather focus on something else.

Where in Nigeria will farmers safely use the so called equipments without their lives being in danger or their crops being likely devoured by cows

Why do these machineries always go to the north? There is no way we don’t have industrial scale farms in other regions. Haba na, these abokis want the country to depend on them fully. Thank God for Igbos with their enterprising ways despite say wayo too full their body.

This is commendable and the government should try and let it go to those that needs it and not do politics with it as usual distributing only to party who are not even farmers.
Once the country gets our security right as we now know that there is international hands/funding to our security issues and buy subsidize farming more, food prices will crash. A lot is hungry in this country.

That's impressive.

Belarus is one of the former Soviet Union republics. The leasing option is the best in order to lower the entry bar and with 2000 tractors that's a huge figure based off of the first batch... An average of 333 for each of the 6 regional blocs in Nigeria if they choose that format for distribution. I wonder if these are brand new (or refurbished tractors that are still in working condition)?

I've seen videos in the recent past of up to 3 Nigerians with two being from the West of Nigeria and one in Jos who manufacture portable tractors, so, the Nigerian goverments at all levels MUST see how to key them into the agribusiness revolution (i.e., if they are certified OK with proper aftersales services in place).

Last but not least, all-round security is essential against the vicious and incidious foreign herdmen and bandits within some of those agro ecosystems. A man was able to save himself and of staff from one of such attacks about 3 years ago by armed criminals with the aid of his drone which was hovering over the large farmhouse in one of the North-Central states (Kwara State to be precise).

Nice one we need more, we need people for maintenance and even manufacturing of these farm equipments here in Nigeria. And then every farm medium to large scale especially should have access to these even if the Government leases or rents it to them at discounted rates it’ll help a lot in increasing food production and even reducing food prices
