Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for alleged defamation.

The PUNCH reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan raised concerns after her Senate seat was reassigned following a reshuffle triggered by opposition switching to the majority wing.

She resisted the relocation, leading to a confrontation between her and the Senate President.

However, in a suit filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on 25 February 2025, the President of the Senate, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Senior Legislative Aide to the Senate President, Mfon Patrick, were listed as the second and third defendants

Uduaghan, through her lawyer, Victor Giwa, alleged that defamatory statements were made by the Senate President and published by his aide on Facebook.

According to him, the post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” included a statement suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan believed being a lawmaker was only about “pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.”

Giwa argued that the statement was defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, lowering his client’s dignity in the eyes of her colleagues and the public.

In addition to seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent the defendants and their associates from making further defamatory statements about her, she also demanded N100 billion in general damages and N300 million for litigation costs.

“An order for the payment of the sum of N100,000,000,000 as general damages. An order for the payment of the sum of N300,000,000 as the cost of action,” her lawsuit stated.

People who want respect should honour the golden rule of respect which is ... first respect yourself.

The truth is that this woman hasn’t represented womenfolk credibly. Too much drama! Women like her block opportunities for other women with their conduct.

Men don’t like drama, if your wife gives too much drama we find a side chick, if a female colleague gives too much drama we avoid her and become wary of employing or giving opportunities to other women. I wont be surprised if some senators have gone behind the scenes lobbying to not be included in the same committees with her or to have her not included in their committees. That’s what we do as men, we avoid dramatic women and the best way to avoid them is to ensure they are not in your immediate space and any interaction with them is at arms length.!

It has become clear the reason for her attacks on Akpabio.

There were women in the senate. Some second term senators. This one has not even spent two years and is already showing why she should not be there.

The senate is not anyone's private enterprise. From additional information, Apkabio was guided by the rules.

(1) As senate president, it is his responsibility to allocate seats to every senator.

(2) He can change any senator's seat due to exigencies like defections or court-returned senators or by-elections.

(3) In the past in this senate, the seats of troublesome senators were changed and they didn't complain. In Saraki's senate, they circulated videos that Apkabio complained over seat change. They didn't share the part of the video where the same Akpabio realized.

(4) What had become clear is that some senators are gleefully unaware of standing rules. Their ambition and greed guide their conduct. We'd soon commission a story on how senators make money from chairmanship and hip of senate committees and contracts. Note that Akpabio had told an investigative committee that representatives were the ones benefitting from contracts when he was NDDC minister. So the fact that most NDDC projects are abandoned can be traced to our greedy politicians.

They re-allocated her seat based on defections from LP and PDP. Why couldn't she just obey the re-allocation?

The rules were read, and she was told she couldn't be recognized where she sat.

The part Akpabio messed up was instructing the sergeant at arms to throw her out. He had no right to do that. Then began the accusations that Akpabio had been trying to silence her and she'd be a voice of the Nigerian women. Nigerian women do not conduct themselves like classless people.

A general advise to the women in the senate. We have heard cases of some of you slapping colleagues, threatening ministers and acting as if you are over-compensating as though you deserve to be there. You do not need all these. Focus on the job and conduct yourselves with maturity. How come we do not hear of such controversies in the lower chamber? The woman who fought during Patricia Etteh's time: what ever became of her?

We were here when a woman almost fraudulently got herself announced as the winner of an election. Your presence in politics should be a breath of fresh air as women of yore: Queen Amina of Zaria, Moremi, Margaret Ekpo, Dora Akunyili, and so many others who distinguished themselves.

As for Akpabio, it is time you start conducting yourself decently around women. As Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Joy Nunieh said in an interview with Arise News that she deposited a dirty slap on your cheek when you made es at her.
