A dramatic scene unfolded today at the high court in Abuja involving Omoyele Sowore and the police. In a video posted by Sowore, police officers stationed at the court gate refused to grant him access to the premises, despite his insistence that he had a case to attend. Despite his attempts to explain, the officers stood their ground.

However, Sowore—human rights activist, Nigerian politician, and owner of Sahara Reporters—immediately resisted what he described as intimidation and harassment by the Nigeria Police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Standing his ground, he questioned whether they mistook him for Yahaya Bello. Addressing the officers directly, he insisted that neither the EFCC nor the police were officers of the court and, therefore, had no business blocking the court entrance.

After some back and forth, the police eventually backed down, and a determined Sowore was finally allowed into the court premises.

In his post on X (formerly known as Twitter), he wrote:

"The justice system in Nigeria has been hijacked by uniformed, uncouth security agents ranging from @OfficialDSSNG, @PoliceNG, and @CivilDefenceNGR. Today, they illegally blocked the court entrance, harassing everyone just because of a thief, Yahaya Bello @officialgybkogi. The same Yahaya Bello they couldn’t apprehend for months! Even lawyers were harassed—@NigBarAssoc must put an end to this nonsense."

The post quickly garnered thousands of views, likes, and reactions.

Summary:

Omoyele Sowore clashed with the police at the Abuja high court after officers denied him access despite his claim that he had a case to attend. Sowore accused the Nigeria Police and EFCC of harassment and questioned whether they mistook him for Yahaya Bello. He stood his ground, arguing that EFCC and police officers had no business blocking the court entrance. After some resistance, the police eventually allowed him in.

Sowore later took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the presence of security agents at the court, accusing them of hijacking Nigeria’s justice system. His post, which criticized their actions and called on the Nigerian Bar Association to intervene, quickly gained traction online.

Sowore that was doing wahala with Abacha. I don't even know when freedom of speech was more tolerated in Nigeria between Military and this democratic era.

Condemn excess of any governor,LG chairman or any bigman it might end in prison or self exile. Imagine Agba Jalingo that was arrested for trying to overthrow Cross River state government without troops grin And this Sowore with his colleagues in the 90s were having weekly TV programme where they condemned Military in government

I saw a couple of his videos and posts, and just shook my head...!

I thought such attention-seeking behaviour was meant solely for kids.

What a man.

I rate him so much, this man called Sowore, he is bold, confident and he says the truth to power unlike a lot of cowards parading themselves as leaders.

I love Peter Obi but I wish him and Sowore where friends. This is what Nigeria needs right now.

Nigeria media are part of the problem. Sowore is a failed Presidential candidate and not a human right activist. You should call a spade, a spade.

If Sowore has a death wish, he should just go and kpai himself and not hang his death on any law enforcement officer who are just trying to do their job. Even the video posted shows the officers begging Sowore to go back or state his reason for coming to the court. But this guy can be seen harrassing the police and EFCC, abusing them and forcing his way into the court premises. So does it mean anybody can just go inside the court at will? What if he is carrying a gun? Is Sowore saying he is above the law? Can he try this In the USA where he has a resident permit? What kind of nonsense and lawlessness is this?

I don't know if am to say he is right or wrong.

He is wrong for refusing to be cleared by security at the court premises. There might be a high profile case that day. And they need to screen everyone coming into the court house to avoid stories.

He is right by not allowing them manhandle him like they always do to every normal Nigerian. Imagine the other one was about charging at him. Showing how uncivilised our police can be.
