Nigerian Employers And Their Slavery Mentality (23492 Views)

Saw a story on fp about the girl beaten for tendering her resignation and it reminded me of my own first and last time working for a Nigerian employer, three words I use to describe it, modern day slavery. I was fresh out of school and eager to please and even show my prowess, I didn't wanna sit at home like a cow munching on free food cuz my parents hate laziness alot, so I took myself to one company to find a job, met my boss, he was clearly understaffed and doing alot by himself, so he didn't have time to interview me, based on how he was choked up I decided to lend a hand, ran some registration online and did alot of tasks unsupervised, he was impressed so he hired me without an interview or a recruitment process, I was happy when I started until he started getting abusive weeks later. First he calls me during ungodly hours, after closing he doesn't have the right to call me right? But he calls when he feels like, and yells why didn't you do this before going home, why didn't you do that, he was paying me 30k, this was 2016, and he makes me stay after closing hours by refusing to show up so we can conclude and I can go home, I close by six, baba won't show up until 7-8 so I work overtime, and when it's time for salary he will owe me, then he will deduct here and there for imagined transgressions, that time you were late 30mins, you made this mistake and I lost so so money, it was exhausting I tell you, but I didn't quit cuz like I said I was eager to please. Here's the final straw that broke the camels back, he was understaffed, na later I hear why all his staff resigned and ran, he was an abusive pig, when I started I was supposed to be in charge of everything ICT based on I'm a computer sc graduate, he was supposed to get a receptionist and a cashier, he told me he'd hire them shortly that I'm the first of many. He also has students he's teaching IT skills, this man doesn't have a single IT skill, he has no business running an ICT school, but he's charging over 20 students obscene amount of money as school fees and he's not teaching them anything valuable, one time I was teaching web design and he came and yelled that why am I teaching them that, the money they're paying isn't enough for them to learn something that advanced, that am I stupid? In front of the students o, He first started by begging me to substitute as a teacher, so I started teaching, while running the ICT tasks like networking and everything computer related, I no complain cuz I was happy impacting knowledge and the students adored me, later I start receive payments, becoming the cashier and started attending to customers becoming a receptionist, and he was paying me salary for one position instead of three, after a month I brought the issue up, that's when our problems started, sometimes he will call me after I've gone home that money I collected isn't complete and I stole from him, it's as if the man dey take fentanyl, I'll have to visit him and go through transaction records at night to absolve myself cuz I haven't stolen since I was born, his excuse for not hiring more people is, he hasn't found a suitable person, so I brought my sister to him to employ. Then he started creating a riff between me and my sis. Sometimes I'll be working and he will sit her down and they'll be discussing me and laughing, my sis thought he's being jovial but no, he's bantering and gossiping his employee, and that is reducing his status but the pig no know, this is despite him owing me backlogs of salary, he refused to pay so I won't run away, I got fed up. One day I dressed up and came to work, after deep reflection the night before, I pitied my life and felt devalued, so I came to work like nothing happened, then I sat at the lounge chatting and pressing my phone making sure he saw me, I was noisy as hell too, normally he'd yell and I'll scramble like a scared duckling running from a hawk, but as he realize I have had enough and I fit beat am up at that point, he didn't say anything, customers started coming and he was the only one attending to them all, I didn't lift a finger, he couldn't believe it, he was sweating all day, I did that till my closing time and came to his office, look him in the eye and said, I QUIT, brothers and sisters, that was the last time I ever worked for any Nigerian employer, I left the salary for him too, I buckled up and I have been earning online ever since, don't sell yourself to slavery just because you wan survive, the peanuts they pay isn't enough to loose your sanity for. 137 Likes 24 Shares |

I've experienced this same thing. I had to run too. Most Nigerian employers feel they are doing you a favour by employing and paying you peanuts, They feel that you can't survive without them. I don't blame them though, Nigeria does not have strong and far reaching labour laws to protect employees, You're at the mercy of your boss to be used as he/she deems fit. 62 Likes 4 Shares |

Amarachibaby:Free yourself, I bet na teaching, those ones are worse, and females even suffer more than guys, run away cuz it'll only get worse, we don't have labor laws in this country that protects the rights of employees, your boss basically owns you. 24 Likes |

EmeraldHash: Upon all the millions of resources available for learning online you still come to ask this question. You are not yet serious. People who do like this just want to HEAR what others are doing, will you apply it to your own life? NO! will you replicate the success even after you apply it? NO! You just want to hear something easy. You better pick on something and start getting good at it (all the pain, failure and sacrifice) if you are serious. 16 Likes 3 Shares |

Nigerians love to complain that employers don't treat them well but when they become employers themselves they do the same exact thing to their own employees ![]() 44 Likes |

muyico:Exactly what I wanted to say. We have weak and nonfunctional labour unions in Nigeria that's why employers would keep enslaving their staffs. Also most Nigerians are desperate. They just want something doing regardless of the working conditions of the place and the amount they receive. Most employers take advantage of their desperation to treat them badly. 3 Likes |

![]() It's way easier being your own boss if you are disciplined. Imagine working 6-hours a day and you've made 40k to 60k selling fashion items at the comfort of your home. Then you will now tell me to work from 8am to 6pm or even 8pm (including Saturday in most cases) for 300k or 400k. Omor kuku kill me. Selling ordinary wristwatch on Facebook and Instagram suppose make you 30k daily if you run Ads of 5k but my people perish because they lack knowledge and have been enslaved by their mindset. To everyone praying to start their business someday. Please don't ever use "I don't have capital" as an excuse. That's you telling lies to YOU. If you no sabi, say make them teach you. If you like cry for now till tomorrow. Nobody is coming to save you. This is 2025. Don't fool yourself. Guys, if you are honest and smart and you know how to read and write and you come get smartphone. If you're earning less than 500k monthly in Nigeria, I sorry for you. 5 Likes |

I have always been of the opinion that it's high time employees realized that the relationship that exists between employees and employers is a mutual one. If there is no or there are no employees, employers will not be able to do all the work themselves. Without employees, employers will not be able to make the amount of money they plan to make. So, employees should not allow themselves to be used by any wicked employer. |

Workers are not protected in Nigeria. I work 9 to 5 and 36hrs a week, anything before 9a.m and beyond 5p.m is overtime and I get paid × 1.5 and if it is an emergency on a Sunday that I normally shouldn't be at work, I get paid × 2 and should any manager try anything unethical with me, he/she knows there is a serious case to answer to, despite me being non-British. 11 Likes |

My dad only ever sent me one text message in his life and it was this; "My son, never make the same mistakes I made." The only regret I have is not asking him what he meant exactly until he died. But I have tried to deduce. I saw how my dad lived in constant fear of losing his job, how his time was spent pleasing his company heads but got little appreciation. I in 2006 he sent the head office 96 million naira and got nothing in return. I swore that my destiny will always beg in my hands. I work for myself today. It is not the easiest thing to do in this economy. But I will never exchange it for anything in the world. I use my time for myself and my money. I am there for my children and more importantly, I enjoy the fruit of my labour. Nigerian bosses are slave masters. 12 Likes |

Wow, what a harrowing experience! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It's unacceptable for an employer to treat an employee with such disrespect, abuse, and exploitation. The fact that he was taking advantage of his students and overcharging them for IT skills he himself didn't possess is appalling. Your courage and self-worth are irable. Recognizing your value and refusing to be treated poorly is a testament to your strength. Leaving that toxic work environment and finding alternative means of earning a living online was a wise decision. Your story serves as a reminder that employees deserve respect, fair compensation, and a safe working environment. No one should have to endure abuse or exploitation in the workplace. Thank you for sharing your story, and I'm glad you're doing well now. The reason I am an advocate of remote jobs- JobZoneNG on telegram for remote jobs within and outside Nigeria. |
