A Nigerian man, Onyekachi Eze, has shared his devastating experience of losing his wife and unborn baby during surgery at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, Imo State. Eze, in a viral social media video, revealed that the doctors performed a cesarean section (CS) on his wife while watching a YouTube tutorial on how to conduct the procedure. ![]() Eze recounted that his wife was rushed to the hospital in labor when the attending female doctor determined that an operation was necessary due to excessive bleeding. However, rather than conducting a professional medical procedure, the doctors resorted to watching YouTube videos for guidance. And we have ministry of health. What's the regulatory arm of health service in Nigeria? Do they have a face? People should be able to have access to them online about how the health servi e should be run following it's principles and guidelines. And professionals should be member as students and upon graduation. Nigeria chunk out health service e personnel every year with no direction and guidance. We should go back to stone age. We are just tagging along as a country. Just so pissed off. 4 Likes |

descarado: The doctors have names, there is a Chief Medical officer there and the hospital has a name, criticizing any of these is cool and very very okay but to launch this irrational attack on the Ministry of Health and Nigeria as a country is a very daft thing to do Is this the first surgery of its kind to be performed in Nigeria? How is it the fault of the Minister of education that some socalled graduates from a particular Uni, a professional medical practitioner was using a youtube video to perfom a surgery? Most of you just talk for the sake of it. You leave the Doctor go attack who dey Abuja....I fit guess your tribe sef 51 Likes 4 Shares |

If this is true, this is crazy. I once went to the hospital and explained my symptoms to the doctor. I can swear I saw the doctor searching my symptoms on Google on her computer monitor. I know that surgery can be done remotely, through guidance from other doctirs thousand of miles away, but only by highly trained specialists. Most hospitals have been taken over by quacks. 31 Likes 3 Shares |

![]() What do you expect from doctors who ed most of their courses in school by blocking their way through? ![]() But then again, one thing that always leaves me in total bafflement and wonderment is when I read news of Nigerian doctors performing wonders once they set their feet outside the country ![]() 12 Likes 1 Share |

EmperorCaesar:My question is different but at the same time part of the topic. If there is regulatory bodies, all these will be put in check. I fear my regulatory bodies more than the hospital I work in. Infact, hospital istration are scared of them. This keeps the healthcare sector in check. They have their court, lawyers and judges. They don't use normal court. They have their constitution. If we have something like this in Nigeria, the health sector will develop faster. And they have organ that deal with the government. Do we have that in Nigeria? I really want to know and why they are not active. They should not be under any ministry. I pay my yearly due. And I have access to their website, any latest news and latest medical news and regulation. From your first year in medical school, your lecturers will instil the fear of these organs in you. Because if they have that, the Dr will know that she should never perform cs with youtube. Even if the mother and baby survive, she is losing her license after going to the regulatory body court to argue her case. She will not only lose her license but be handed over to the police for normal court proceeding of manslaughter. You see why I asked the question. And as for the rest of your rant, I pay no attention. 16 Likes 1 Share |

I think I will blame NMA for not being thorough in screening those they assign licenses to practice. For those who will attack me claiming they are quacks not certified doctors, I just laugh at your silly defensiveness. I have met and interacted with certified doctors fully licensed who didn't know Jack. Ministry of health is also on this blame table. Let's not even talk about the consistent decay in the tertiary education sector as well. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Most of the private Universities and some state Universities are just producing substandard medical practitioners. The NMA should do the needful ASAP.

Before releasing that sperm into that kpekus, please ask yourself if you have the financial capacity If not, this woman won’t have died… poverty killed her! The man could not afford the right medical procedures and he went to a quack doctor… miketayo: Believe it or not, that’s the fact… People go from Uk and US to Nigeria for treatment.. The medical care in US and Uk is not as you think. Americans lament seriously about the slow system and staying forever on queue. I have followed a friend to the emergency care before and we spent the entire day waiting to just receive stitches… apart from that, health care is so expensive So for many procedures, people go to Nigeria to receive health care at much affordable cost 4 Likes |

Most unfortunate. Are we sure that they're doctors and not quacks? The owner of the hospital will be held responsible anyway.

zed7: There is nothing wrong if a doctor consults reliable online sources during review, especially if it's an uncommon/unusual case. Doctors also consult their colleagues in this instance. This is global practice, not just a Nigerian thing. This is not quackery. Before the internet came around, doctors look up textbooks and journals if/when they are confronted with unusual events. So, looking up information from RELIABLE online sources does not qualify as quackery. Now, the main case. I find this very hard to believe. It is highly unusual for a doctor to watch videos during a procedure. Highly unusual. Even if it's an emergency and one cannot do the procedure, the teaching is to stabilize and refer to the closest centre with adequate competence. Doctors can watch procedure videos online BEFORE the procedure...but this is not the primary source of their training. Surgical competence is gained over years of training through residency and its vigorous academic works...and personal research (ie, online videos). But to watch these in the theatre? Never heard of this! This story should be adequately investigated and the public must be patient to hear from the doctor and the facility in question. 13 Likes |

Sadly this is a normal practice in Nigeria. Even older doctors do it and then I pity this younger ones who are more social media rats than doctors |

Sonnobax15: Those practising abroad have been duly trained here and certified by the health authorities over there. Obviously, they're not among those who may have cut corners to acquire their licenses here. |
