Bought a 2017 Lexus Rx350with 58000 miles only to find out the engine block (aluminium part) is broken and they sealed it up with glue.

Also it's an accident car, has lots of sensor light on I didn't check well until I took it home.

This is for those blaming people for buying old cars. Even recent rides are not spared

Oh well, Nigeria or anywhere else, people rarely sell their cars because they are sick of it and want to get something new, used cars market is where you need a good and trusted mechanic, luck and prayers.
Some sellers will sincerely tell you what the problem is, many others will make God their witness stressing the car is perfect even when it is far from that.
Foreign used? A used car is a used car, cars start to wear the second they're driven off the lot, and like I said, these foreign used cars often have their own issues, we just tend to want to believe it is the jealous neighbour or wicked step mum that has looked at the car with evil eyes lol, or some unskilled mechanic did something.
Many foreign used car sellers have a long list of body work pros, mechanics and rewires 😂 they'll put together or patch up anything to look nice, engine, trans, seats or even dash, etc, I have seen this, that Nigerian used car seller should probably be trusted more than the popular foreign used car dealer.
If you have eyes for details, some of these things can be caught just by looking at, frame of car, nuts on engine and trans, slightly different colours of bumper to body, etc, most of these foreign used cars are accidented☹️, someone bought a Toyota Corolla 2017 accidented, a year after bought Toyota highlander 07 ( also accidented lol) that one even overheated the same weak and was lucky engine didnt go, the week after it was AC compressor, then condenser 😂 and then the battery, the car has the timing chain noise on start up already.
Consider other brands, not so old cars, and maybe start looking at cars bought brand new in Nigeria.

I no dey even buy car again sef. I go just save my money and japa undecided

If not for fund, there is nothing sweet as buying a Tokunbo car.
If not for poverty, your best bet is a new car. No second hand product is without a degree of issue...

Which EOD. What does it guzzle? Money or Fuel? Most people hate honda cars until you own one. I have a EOD, I bought nigerian used 6 months ago for 2.2m. I changed the engine and since then. I've put over 5k miles on the guy and it's doing pretty fine. The only expenses is just my own youthful desire. Like buying screen, buying some fancy light and all those funny stuffs. I'm still 23 lol. Lemme enjoy my youth. 😆 🤣 😂

I had a DC and the legs show me pepper. Fuel consumption did not favour me too then. But that was like 7 - 8 years ago tho. I've moved on from honda tho but the 2018 accord upwards they enter my eye sha. Enjoy your youth oh.. YOLO.

I step out of Lagos searching for a reliable camry 2004. I saw many dealers on Jiji and nairaland. I visited each of them with my reliable mechanic.
After checking several cars, we discovered that none of the Nigerian used cars is worth buying .
They always have one problem or the other. The most common is bad engines.

Many dealers even promised to give my mechanic 100k behind my back to convince me to buy this melon car.

That's the problem, there is no honesty in Nigerian market for fairly used Nigerian cars, they must hide the car's problem from the potential buyer like it is normal to do so.
In a decent society with correct moral com, they would tell the potential buyers the problems such cars are having and give the prices accordingly. It will then up to the buyers to decide if they want go for it if they think they have a good bargain and can fix the problems.
But in Nigeria, a faulty car that should go for 1.5 million naira would be presented as faultless car or a car with minor faults with 3 million naira last price. Greedy bastardss and dishonest people everywhere

What did you do after finding out?
You should have taken it back with the involvement of police and court threat since they intentionally hid all these major problems from you and presented the car as faultless

I used to have Eod, and it drank fuel a lot. I will buy 1000 fuel every day, this was 2010! How much did you spend daily fueling eod now?

It wasn't funny but I noticed much savings when I changed to a muscle Camry then. This was around 2012 tho. Maybe the car had silent issues I was unaware of.

Personally, I think you are trivialising this issue of sellers of Nigerian used cars by saying that foreign used cars (and their sellers) are in the same category. May be you have forgotten that many Nigerians don't even know what new cars/vehicles look like. Tokunbo is our common new motors in Nigeria because they the closest to new motors that majority of Nigerians could afford. The difference between the two is like difference between the ground and the space.
Less than 10% of tokunbos in Nigeria could have hidden issues while over 90% of Nigerian used could have hidden issues. What are you even saying? No be foreign used cars later becomes Nigerian used cars? grin grin

What’s wrong with these dealers?

Why can’t they be upfront with the owners
and tell them that the car they’re trying to sell is scrap? Why is it so hard for them to be honest with the owners ? I don’t mind buying a car with a bad engine, but the problem arises when it’s sold at the price of one with a sound engine.

I when I wanted to sell my van. The first buyer who came, I told him to look for another van. The second buyer mentioned he had borrowed money and needed a van for hauling, but I still advised him to find a different one. Eventually, I sold it to someone who only needed it for body parts, and we’re still friends to this day.

They want to make maximum gain from it. So, to them, rip off is all fair game

Is buying a car from a yahoo boy the new trend now? I hope someone will not buy an accursed vehicle. The end may not be good o....

Superstition. Lol
Yahoo boys will always get broke if money doesn't flow steadily and they will be selling off their properties to maintain until nothing is left to sell or hit it again

95% of people selling their cars is because it's faulty. They've repaired and repaired and are tired of repairing it so they'll just put it up for sale.

That's why I tell people to avoid Nigerian used cars cos na problem you de buy. They money you'll spend in fixing it would exceed the amount you spent in buying it.

Go to apapa those cars coming in from the ship, negotiate with a dealer, pay and carry your car home. You'll use it for up to 2 years before it starts giving you any major issue .

Two years? For a car that you're using privately? I doubt it except for the lack of maintenance

I am just laughing ..inasmuch as I feel your frustration ..but that should be a yardstick for generalisation. We will continue to serve our client and by God's grace we are still getting our reward . A nairalander ed me to I spect a car he saw somewhere . We booked uber and when we got there very early I stared the car and the engine sounds like it was manufactured today ...I didn't look back than to proceed to the next stage of due diligence ...we bought the car and on our way back home the ac wasn't cooling well . The next day I introduced him to my ac man and everything was fixed perfectly...a few days later I introduced him to my mechanic and he went to his house to service the car with quality oil . Right now the nairalander sends me money like water .sometimes he will say just use this money to buy pepper soup...I will thank him and appreciate him for being kind . There are many good people here ..I.have personally met many good dealers here . One thing I have learnt from some buyers is that they hate truth . They always say my cars are expensive ...in trying to get cheaper ones they run into problem ...they learn the hard way.

In summary...there are so many good dealers here .There are equally some dis honest ones
Low budget car can
only attract bad cars for you .

Blame inflation and the devaluation of the Naira
Custom's import duty is the major problem. I used 555k to clear something of 671k.

Rubbish cars are on sale for high price

Some Nigerians are actually wicked and greedy. After misusing the car for donkey years they seek for a maga to offload the nonsense on. They don't even put in effort on make the car at least reliable for the next owner. Some people are truly demonic and wicked.

It's crazy that with 4.5 million, all you can get is a bad car.
We return home disappointed.

On getting home. I went back to check my own car that I have been driving for 5 years. My engine, gear, and ac are still in perfect condition and I wonder if those putting their car on sale are those with major problem.

Nigeria dealers have ruined the used car market.
Is this a problem with toyota or because the car is a lower year.

I didn't consider other brands. Maybe it would have been a different situation.

At the moment, we are considering buying Tokunbo direct or on installment payment in order to evade this madness in the Nigerian used car Market
Nigeria is finished....2yrs ago, you could bring tokunbo suv in with 3M

I fixed it and the dealer paid for all the repairs. The car has sound engine nonetheless everything else is perfect.

sad

Makes you wonder.

All those dreams, hopes, plans etc. gone in just 2 weeks.

Makes you wonder.

It's life, it happens, the world will move on.

Same way also, I was to sell off a car worth 78m to a grandpa for his 80th birthday, in the day the daughter was to make payment the man died a week to his birthday.

Business is embedded with a lot of life lessons, one has to have a big heart to stay afloat.

Life and death happens to every living thing, one can never be prepared enough for it.

gasparpisciotta:
Many car dealers are greedy hence very dishonest.

You will see many of them on Nairaland using phrases like ‘barely driven’, ‘owner’s second car’,
‘everything intact’.

Thereby pricing Naija used cars in the range of Tokunbo, some will rub the car with pomade and wear condoms on the seat to their dead cars.

the best way to go here is to buy from a broke yahoo boy or tell your trusted ones u need a car, they will tell someone they know n get a good one for u

All these jiji n online rubbish, I can't even waste my time on it

Tell a yahoo boy u need a car, he will look for broke yahoo boys wanting to sell their car less
Stop this nonsense abeg.
I bought my Car on Jiji since 2020 and I'm still using it till date.
Never buy from a broke yahoo cos you may be buying a blood vehicle.
