The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has refuted claims by some northern leaders that the committee did not consult with governors before drafting the proposed tax reform bills.

Oyedele was responding to claims by Buba Galadima, who, during an appearance on Arise Television, argued that the committee had neglected consultations with northern leaders and only engaged with the governor of Lagos State.

In his response, Oyedele pointed to the governors’ lack of cooperation, stating that four scheduled meetings were cancelled, limiting their ability to engage effectively.

He revealed that despite efforts to meet with governors from each of the six geopolitical zones, only Lagos State’s governor responded positively to the committee’s requests.

Oyedele added that although the Kaduna State governor had originally consented to meet, plans changed and the deputy governor took his place.

The other governor who was willing to welcome us was the governor of Kaduna State. And after all the logistics, we agreed on the date, but on that day he wasn’t able to attend. It was the deputy governor that hosted us. I will not name the other governors, but I can actually if I need to. They didn’t have time for us,” he said.

Oyedele also revealed that the Governors’ Forum invited the committee to meet with them four times, but on each occasion, the meetings were cancelled.

According to him, on the fifth attempt, the committee kept waiting until 1:30 am and was given only 15 minutes for discussions.

And I said, your excellencies, we have a lot to talk about. They said, tell us how our revenues will go up. Even that, we couldn’t say in 15 minutes. We had a half a day engagement with the finance commissioners from across Nigeria. We’ve had more than four engagements with the heads of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from all over Nigeria.

We’ve had engagements with different groups, more than 40 sectors, from manufacturers to SMEs to FinTech. And these things were published.

He claimed that the expedited the compilation of the reforms because, in addition to the fact that Nigeria can not afford to waste time, it must promptly alleviate its “pain” and put the country on the correct course for development.

Oyedele also noted that they engaged with over 120 Muslim clerics, mostly from the north, and the League of Northern Democrats, to discuss the potential impact of the tax reforms.

He added that the committee consulted with more than 20 government institutions, the private sector, manufacturers, SMEs, and over 40 different sectors, including FinTech.

We have more than 20 government institutions represented. We have the private sector, whether it’s manufacturers, whether its women in business. We have 45 students from 22 universities across Nigeria,” he said.

Bunch of Lazy governors.

Apprehension about commitments due to the complexity of tax reform implementation, which they perceive as an overwhelming system that will keep them constantly vigilant.

Their cancellation of the meetings has proven that no Governor aside the Governor of Lagos don't trust Tinubu & his Tax reform.

Their is no trust between the State Governors & the FG.

This Tax reform will be difficult to sail through under the emilokan government because the malistration has trust, competence & integrity issues

Sounds like they have been waiting for the perfect excuse to oppose Tinubu and lay a marker for 2027 northern victory.
Where in the world does a producer reward consumer. It is consumer who pay producers for value added to raw inputs. A producer can then reward her host according to local laws but that will be chaotic if the extent of reward is determined in each local constituency. This is why the central govt has to set a level playing field like Tinubu is doing here.

it won't. Thats why the FG is there. To create a level playing field and avoid states milking available industries instead of attracting more industries.

The northerners used insecurity to oppose GEJ in 2015 and the south fell for it, they're trying to use this tax reform to oppose BAT, but they should look for something else because nobody get their time.

The matter hook them for throats. The reform is a good one but lazy governor’s with zero doings would be affected. That’s why they’re scared!

You recharge Mtn card in Kano and you pay taxes to Kano state government, instead of Lagos..

You recharge Mtn card in kaduna and pay your taxes to Kaduna state government, instead of Lagos..

Why should that be a problem? Lagos that’s suppose to be against it is not even against it..

From what I’ve observed about the reform, I think it has some tone of regionalism & it has a liberty to pave way for more bills to move Nigeria back to regionalism... This is the main reason the northern side are more scared... Dogara said it in one interview that the reform will open the eyes of lazy governors..

SS stakeholders already the bill cuz it will pay then at the long run, as they can easily push up more bills that can let them have more dominance over their oil derivation..

Drinking alcohol in the south and sharing the taxes with the north where alcohol is haram is barbaric to me.... I really wonder who proposed the bill that way initially! It was a stupid bill for real! This coming reform is a nice game changer !

But when their allocations were almost doubled, they collected it and kept mute. Why not reject increase in allocations since they do not trust the FG of emilokan? I just weak for people like you who take every opportunity to white wash your government,

All these governors want is just to collect FAAC monthly and share

Less than ten of them are really doing the business of governance

Many of them are a bunch of intellectually lazy kleptomaniacs

The tax reform bill must be ed and Nigeria must be restructured

Even most Nigerians do not understand the tax reform bill. The FG is simply saying no more monthly federal allocation, make your money as a state, and give us only 15% of it monthly!!!
By so doing, you will get to understand that the major arm of government that should develop your state is the state Governors...
But the ones in the North dey fear because they are only good at stealing...
How can a state be earning less than 500m within a month and be expecting federal allocation of 10 billion every month? Just for Governors to embezzle.

The North milks South-South's oil tax revenue, that is not enough, gets Lagos state's and River state's VAT, the FG says it's enough but like a leach, a leach would never leave the host easily without throwing tantrums and staging oppositions.

Please, what does the North ever give the South? Their gold, they say it's theirs only, but continue to want to eat from the South's pot and leave terrorism and banditry in their ing.

The tax reform bill, it has to !

The bill should encom resource derivation distribution.

If states know that they would get 60% of whatever resources are harnessed from the states, the governors will be more interested because the more resources they are able to access, the higher thier revenues. A state like Ondo would supply the whole Nigeria with bitumen and export too. All the gold and other solid minerals that the north keeps allowing to be mined by illegal people would stop because the masses and government would now have a higher stake.

How can you remove vat on unprocessed agricultural produce and gas. How would states with comparative advantage in those areas be interested in investing in it? Or is it all tomatoes that would be turned into paste or all yam into flour?

Also, With a proper derivation formula, there would also be no need to increase VAT to 15%, double what is currently paid. The way the economy is at this time, such an increase would not be okay.
