Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has justified the reason for calling for the withdrawal of the controversial tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu-led government.

The governor, who was part of those who briefed the media on the position of the National Economic Council (NEC) on the proposed bill, following which he was criticised by a section of the public for opposing the tax reform bill, said Nigerians should learn to focus on the message rather than the messenger.

Makinde made the clarification, at the weekend, during a media chat on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (because), Ibadan.
He asserted that he was not opposed to the tax reform bills, but that the Federal Government needed to engage with a wider array of stakeholders to achieve a meaningful reform.

“At the level of the National Economic Council, we asked the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force a question on the whereabouts of the bill and he said that it was already at the National Assembly. I said if that was the case, why are you just coming here for us to debate and give you the approval as prayed? It amounted to putting the cart before the horse.

“It was an agreement reached unanimously at the NEC meeting. We said, withdraw this bill from the National Assembly and let us have a wider consultation. If people have reservations here and there, it is a national issue and you can seek alignment. And when you align, it may be in the original form, or you may have to tweak it to accommodate whatever the stakeholders are going to say.

“I was asked to be part of the people that would brief the media, and my bit was to explain our decision on why the bill should be withdrawn so that consultation could happen with stakeholders, but some people just focused on the messenger instead of focusing on the message,” he said.

Next time, you need to be more cautious and display a level of emotional intelligence. Now, you coming out to say you the bill. The fact that the bill was before the NASS before bringing it to NEC, should it then be thrown away?. That was a needless show of ego.

There is no love lost between T-pain and Nigerian governors.

The same way he'd treated Lagos governors like boy boy (even before ascending the seat of presidency) is the same way he intends to treat the 36 States governors like boy boy, as president. Man has always had disrespect and disdain for the governors.

He sees himself as a demi-god and wants everyone to bow to his whims and caprices.

don't mind the fool. Can he and his co travellers swear by any God they believe on that they are not aware of the existence of the tax reform committee and their mandate for them to have made an input. Everybody is claiming wider consultation but turned deaf ears when this committee was working nights and days for almost a year or so.

Makinde is right on this... You can't force useless policies on the people without a well scrutiny especially after several useless hardship policies created this far.

Tinubu, listen to the voice of reasoning... Don't be unfortunate Sir

No food for lazy man.

If you keep feeding the lazy man even the rich will become broke and all will stink in poverty. That has been the story of Nigeria.

The other alternative is a complete break up make everybody go their separate way so we kuku know the Somalia and we know the Dubai.

Iam from the south and I will definetly any tax reform but their should be due consultation with all necessary bodies, this is not a family affair or kitchen cabinet affair and this man has alot of policies that is not yielding any result because he only think of himself. Why rush to the national assembly when there are other stakeholders involved.

The national assembly is the rightful place for consultation.

As for the Oyo State Governor, the northern Governors pushed you forward to run their errand, you didn't think asking a President to withdraw a bill is public humiliation.

Would a northern Governor have accepted to read such press statement under Mr Buhari if the South was against a bill.

You too reason am na.

Anyway, none of you is politically wiser than the President. He threw the NEC's request in the bin.

Now you are embarrassed and NEC has been humiliated as a meaningless gathering.

JAGABAN is not demi-god, he is the god of Politics and Strategy. The Bills will be ed even if no single human s it. Even when all Nigerians were deceived by useless politicians and protested all over the country, yet the god of Politics still came on television an said NO GOING BACK. So, consider the Bills as already ed. If you want to die, make you die

You mean like PIB that spent 20 years in the National Assembly? Supreme Court should make the judgment brought by Rivers and Lagos on VAT quickly so that all these guys can start thinking properly.

You are still saying nonsense Makinde. President should withdraw bill, talk to you first before presenting the bill? Because you are NA? Show precedence of this please.
Your "bit" was to "talk"? In other words you were asked to explain why what "you are not opposed to" should be withdrawn first, before you can it?
Oyo dey!

My Gov Seyi dey fall hands at times, even when you expect him to talk sometimes he'll just decide to be mute.

Let it not be what am thinking that you are eyeing 2027, therefore trying to please the northerners by playing politics with something that will mostly benefit the masses.
Oga use your sense before them use you!

Tinubu taking the matter to the National assembly is the right move. You governors cannot be the judge in the matter that takes lazy and free money off your table please.

Next time, please be more careful and show greater emotional awareness. Now you are expressing your for the bill. Since the bill was presented to the NASS before being brought to the NEC, should it be disregarded? That seemed unnecessary. - Embrace the truth!
seunayantokun(m): 3:18pm On Dec 23, 2024
What a stupid thing to do! You know the bills benefit the country as a whole but some people pushed you forward as a Dundee united to say something contrary to your conviction and you obliged them. Take a stand and make it clear.

Once you withdraw the bills, an opportunity for progress in this country is defeated. That is what those enemies of good things want to achieve.

If I were Mr. President, I would suspend the bills and then allow Rivers State and Lagos State which is ing the tax case at the supreme court to go ahead. Definitely, because the constitution is clearly on the side of states on the matter, they would win, and it would be a case of winners take all. Then those people's eyes would be open to their devilishness. Nonsense.
Is Makinde wise at all, or he's being stupid for his future political interest? Nonsense.
