Wow. Was it your MSc work or something else? Do you know if they'll regard my MSc work or I should think about something else? What journal exactly? Was it in Nigeria?

No, it was an article publication in the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (Public Law) Journal. You can add your MSC work as part of your research experience or output, if there is room for that in the application. I did something similar too, where they asked for research experience.

Even if you don't have a journal publication, you can work towards it, but don't ever disqualify
yourself.

Thanks for writing back. I'm just thinking anything out there in your name should count as long as it's formal.

Hello all,

I have been granted full scholarship for my PhD at WSU. I have a short window to apply for visa as I am to resume in Jan. I already have the COE from the school, but these are my queries:

How much has to be in my SOA if I am attaching one. Or if I need to attach any at all, given the full scholarship, which includes living expenses of $35k yearly.

Do I need to attach IELTS as the school did not require it. And I heard it is exempted for PhDs.

Ties include an affidavit stating that I have inherited land; a company which I am shareholder and director. The CEO has written that I will be returning to work as COO. I also am a secretary of an arts community, while holding an appointment with a state governor.

How does this profile look and what else might hamper visa approval.

Waiting for your responses, my Egbons.

Hi Ikechukwu, congratulations. I would like to connect with you. I have been offered ission to Master (Research), but I deferred to next year. I want to learn of how you would do your process.

Hello house! Pls, I have a question. If I study environmental microbiology for PhD in one of the universities in Australia, after graduation, can I get a good jobs as a microbiologist? Are there restrictions on people on visas on the kind of job they can do? ie are they limitations on the kind of jobs foreigners can do in Australia even duo they attended university in the country?

Hello IK, please, what CGPA did you have to have been considered for a scholarship? I'm currently rounding up my MSc program. I want to see if I'll stand a chance to apply.

I think it is a consideration of your overall academic and professional experience that makes you eligible for the scholarship. I had 3.98/5 for my undergraduate and 61.6% for my masters. But like I said, it takes more than these. You also have to show research experience through the work you do or academic papers to be considered.

Hope that helps.

Yea. This really helps. My BSc was a mess but my MSc may make sense. I don't know how the calculation is done to get you to 61.6% but can something like 2 A's and the rest B's get me to something between 60% and up? I have at least 7 years of experience in development work in the area of data management/social services/community development. I also have PGD which I used to gain ission into MSc.

With such a performance in your Msc, you should be good.

Other considerations are requirements from your destination school and the peculiar needs of the scholarship. Some insist that you have publications.

I want to publish my thesis and also use the study dataset to do a different publication. Can that two be enough? What publication platform is worthy of their consideration?

Hi everyone, I’ll appreciate a bit of guidance on my situation here please.

I’m 23 and I’ve just graduated from a university here in Nigeria and I’ve applied to study Masters in Public health in Australia.

With the recent negative experience for Nigerian study visas, do you think I should apply for a bachelors degree instead so I can have a strong case for my visa application or should I stick to masters?

Your choice of course is a concern as Pulic Health as a degree is not on Skilled Occupation List which means you can't use it to get PR.
Student visa are still being issue to Nigerians, just do the right thing and pray.

Just to add to Ikechukwu's comment about test of English. I will suggest that those who want to make use of medium of instruction (MOI) from their Nigeria universities go through the requirements on the Home Affairs website properly. The MOI can only be used if your graduation is not more than five years (according to the Home Affairs website), and it's usually more applicable/considered for PhD and Masters by Research compared to those going for Masters by Coursework. Try to double/triple check to prevent unnecessary delay in visa decision.

About publication, it's not a requirement for MSc by coursework, but highly recommended for MSc by Research, especially if one aims to get the scholarship. For PhD, it is an unwritten rule that it's mandatory (at least one), with research experience as Ikechukwu rightly said. The scholarships are highly competitive, especially in the Go8 universities.

For visa application, if you have a scholarship covering both tuition and stipend, you may not need to present any other proof of fund (depending on the value of the stipend and number of applicants for the visa). DHA will confirm directly from your university about your scholarships and make their accept if they think your stipend is enough to cater for you. Just dot your i's and cross your t's, and all should be smooth.

All the best to everyone!

Is it true that once you're 35 and you apply for MSc VISA the probability of denial is big?
Kdamilola(m): 12:46pm On Dec 15, 2024
I don't think age impacts your chance of student visa. One of the downside, however, is that you will not qualify for the temporary graduate visa (visa 485) after graduation, if you studied a Masters by coursework, due to age. If your study is a Masters by Research or PhD, you will be eligible for visa 485 so far you are not above 50.

Also, at that age (35), you may have a study gap (i.e., the time you completed your BSc may be long ago). You have to be able to justify any study gap (eg, show evidence of work, etc., during this period). So, at that age, MSc by coursework is not recommended. You can opt for a MSc by Research, to qualify for the visa 485 after graduation.

I hope this helps to some extent. You can get more information from https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/student-500

Hi Kdamilola,

My IELTS result goes thus: listening= 5.5, reading =6, writing=6 speaking=7.5, overall 6.5. Is this score sufficient for visa processing for master of research considering the low score in listening. I have been given ission already.
Thank you

Masters by coursework is usually characterised by higher number of courses and little to no research component. You will attend classes, but may not be required to submit a thesis from independent research at the end of the day. Although, in some disciplines, you are still required to submit a thesis, but it doesn't take much of your time. I think it's usually targeted for the last 6 months. However, masters by research requires you to take course (usually not as much as MSc by coursework), and carry out an independent research which will lead to a thesis submission at the end of your program.

Hello!

I'm sorry, I may not be the best to answer this because I've never done one myself; however, I'll try. The University of Sydney English language requirement states that overall 6.5 score is required, with no band less than 6.0. This means that it may be different from school to school.

Also, since you already have an ission (MSc by Research for that matter), I believe DHA may be able to accept whatever score your university accepts to make decision on your visa (The website states that you do not need to provide evidence of English test score if you are enrolled in a ed post-graduate research course). You can try to read more about the requirements from the DHA website (https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/student-500#Eligibility) to learn more about what applies to you.

Regards.

Thanks for your comment. But I still can't spot the difference in regards to me. Now, I enrolled for an MSc program. We did 8 courses plus research (I had a supervisor though). Program took 2 years. What's that? MSc by coursework or MSc by research?
