FMINO PRESS STATEMENT

President Tinubu committed to ability on tax bills, directs Ministry to work with NASS on concerns

***President Tinubu will always act in the interest of the Nigerian people

1.The robust nationwide debate on the new tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly is welcomed, and commendable. It is very inspiring to see Nigerians from all walks of life coming out to express their views and opinions of these matters of critical national importance. This is the very essence and meaning of democracy.

2.I call on all commentators and groups to keep up the spirit of informed engagement, and to strive to be respectful and understanding at all times despite the diversity of opinions. In the spirit of democratic engagement, there should be no room for name-calling, or for the injection of unnecessary ethnic and regional slurs into this important national conversation.

3.Similarly, it is important to be aware that there is a lot of misinformation and fake news circulating around the tax bills and the overall reform agenda of the Tinubu istration. The fiscal reforms will not impoverish any State or region of the country, neither will they lead to the scrapping or weakening of any federal agencies.

4.Instead, they will bring relief to tens of millions of hardworking Nigerians across the country and empower and position our States and the 774 Local Governments for sustainable growth and development.

5.President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is implementing an ambitious fiscal reform agenda that will devolve more resources to Nigeria’s State and Local Governments, and ultimately to the Nigerian people, in the spirif of harnessing democracy that works for the people.

6. It is pertinent to state that the government has nothing sinister to warrant the suggestion that the process is being rushed. In line with the established legislative procedure, the Federal Government welcomes meaningful inputs that can address whatever grey areas there may be in the bill. In this vein, President Tinubu has already directed the Federal Ministry of Justice and relevant officials who worked on the drafts to work closely with the National Assembly to ensure that all genuine concerns have been addressed before the bills are ed.

7.We are indeed witnessing, at this moment in the history of Nigeria, the most far-reaching, impactful and beneficial set of fiscal reforms that Nigeria has seen in decades.

8.In addition to the four tax bills being debated and deliberated upon, there is also the 2023 Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for local governments, which will significantly empower the tier of government that is closest to the Nigerian people.

9.In all, these reforms will not only facilitate increased revenues (without imposing additional tax burdens on the people), they will also make it possible for citizens to demand and enjoy greater ability in the management of public resources at all levels of government.

9.President Tinubu and the istration will continue to champion policies that close the loopholes and gaps through which Nigeria’s valuable public resources have been frittered away for decades.

10.On top of this necessary foundation, the resources being conserved and realized from these reforms will be invested in critical infrastructure (healthcare, education, transportation, digital technology, etc) and in social investments that will benefit all Nigerians and ensure that no one is left behind. This is the promise and the reality of the Renewed Hope agenda.

Only those who seek to benefit from the work of others without contributing anything are against the bill

The president is making it clear that this time, there will be no more situations where one region does all the work while another reaps the benefits. The north can cry furiously about it all they want but Tinubu ain’t their mama to wipe their noses 👃 the bill must . 😂😂

The tax bill is generating lots of resistance from a region most probably because it will expose the lack of creativity by the most of the theiving governors. Enough of the feeding bottle Republic. Let's for once practice a semblance of true federalism.

Good. I trust my president, e no fit ever fold. The debate should move to the National Assembly. The public hearing is a very good avenue for all interested parties to engage and communicate their concerns. Withdrawing the bill for any consultation outside the legislative process should never be an option.

I'm really worried why the north is so against this bill. So whatever they deem unfavorable to them shouldn't see the light of day? They're joking. This bill must be ed.

After this tax reforms debate, electricity banding should follow. There should be no special price for those (normally and abnormally forced into) on Band A. It should rather be: the more you supply me with energy, the more units I consume and not the other way round.

I am not a er of Tinubu govt in any way, but on this Tax Reform Bill, I will him. Tinubu should stand his ground against these Northerners that always want to have their ways at the detriment of other regions.
Even if so called useless Northern elites cry foul as much as they want, Tinubu should not answer them. Let them cry till eternity.
These bunch of useless Northerners are very selfish self centered parasites who are only interested in themselves.
You are not bringing much to the table, but you always want to take much off the table. The oil in the South has sustain the country for decades, with the proceeds going to federal coffers to be shared to all states. Now that they discovered gold and diamonds in the North, they are exploring the gold and diamonds and pocketing the proceeds to themselves and not paying a dime to FG, while using Banditry to cover their criminal activities.
Tinubu should not bother to answer them. This feeding bottle federalism must stop. You contribute little to the coffers, you get little .
Tinubu should bring in to mine in the North and chase away the criminal bandits so monies can be generated to the federal coffers.
Awon werey Ole that calls themselves Northern Elders Oshi.

Every lover of Nigeria must this bill. Anyone crying or antagonising this bill is either a leach, parasite or purely ignorant of the benefits.

This bill is clearly more favourable to the poor while the rich will have to pay more taxes. The rich knows this, that's why they recruiting the ignorant masses against the bill.
The lazy governors are also crying against the bill instead of getting to work and start making their states productive.
Nigeria doesn't belong to the Hausas and Fulani alone. Enough is enough.

One of the most controversial issues in this Tax Reform Bill is that 60% of VAT to be shared by states will be given to the state it was collected from, It seems by this it will only favour mostly Lagos and Rivers State to the detriment of the Northern states who are collecting more VAT based on population.

Here is my concern, Lagos state was deliberately made the commercial headquaters of the Nation to the detriment of other states the more reason it collects more taxes.

Practically, All the cars entering the country pays their tax to only Lagos state. Even the cars to be used in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Cross River states. Now this is not fair to these states as they have their own seaports but cars are not entering them, the taxes they are supposed to get as a state goes to Lagos state.

Also, Telecom companies pay their VAT in Lagos because their headquaters are located in Lagos, If this new bill is ed, that is no longer fair to all other states where the Telcom companies operate. Telcom companies should now start paying VAT to each state they operate as you can no longer rob Peter to pay Paul.

Oil companies have their headquaters located in Lagos while they operate in different states especially in the Niger Delta. This will no longer be fair if the bill is ed becaused those states where the oil companies operate will start demanding that the oil companies pay thier VAT in those states they operate.

The truth is this bill if ed, is seriously going to open litany of issues which I dont think at the moment the bill captured or resolved it.

Another worrisome dimension, this may prompt the oil producing states to start demanding for 60% of the oil revenues from their respective states, once this happens, chaos will reign supreme in the country.

I have taken time to study the content of the tax reform bill and public discourse that have lent voices and weighed in in its favour,I must say if it is ed and genuinely implemented it will move this nation forward. For the people that expressed their misgivings and dissenting opinions they have the right to do so because APC-led government has given us reasons many times to doubt its good intents and purposes.

Rubbish

If the Northern Governors like, they can sell their people's interest for Tinubu's bribe like they did during the elections.

If Tinubu wants to change the model of VAT collection, then he must also the change the way Crude Oil money is shared. Niger Delta Crude oil cannot continue funding Nigeria while the region is a dead-zone.
All Niger Delta States should be in control of their resources if that's the case.

Whether by consumption or any other way, Lagos is still the biggest beneficiary.

You don't want beer to be sold in your domain but you're getting from the VAT generated from beer sales in another state.
