The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has stated that the state is among the few in the country capable of thriving without federal .

Abiodun made this remark in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Saturday at the public launch and commissioning of the Olumo Courts serviced apartments and related facilities.

He noted that his istration’s policies have positioned Ogun as one of the top states in of internally generated revenue (IGR).

On 28 October, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) collectively generated N2.43 trillion in IGR in 2023, a 26.5 percent increase from the N1.92 trillion recorded in 2022.

“Ogun State generated more revenue than five states in one zone and six in another in 2023, according to a recent report by the NBS,” Abiodun said. “We are among the few states that can succeed without federal .”

The governor addressed criticisms directed at his istration’s urban renewal initiatives in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Ibara, Abeokuta, where Olumo Courts are located.

He commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who he credited for championing the project, for bolstering his istration’s commitment to urban transformation in the state.

He encouraged Ogun residents to draw inspiration from the development, which features 36 luxury smart apartments with modern amenities, including a swimming pool, tennis court, gym, and squash court.

“We embarked on the urban renewal of Abeokuta, beginning with Ibara GRA, despite significant criticism,” he said. “The success of Olumo Courts affirms that we are on the right path.”

The governor added that the courts would generate jobs and attract investment, particularly from Nigerians living abroad.

He further explained that the project’s approval process took 17 months due to essential redesigns required to meet urban regeneration standards.

Speaking at the event, former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo highlighted Abeokuta’s unique geographical features, which make it an appealing city poised to welcome the world.

Rotimi Martins, a member of the development team, described the project as the first smart city estate within the GRA.

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, noted in his speech that the courts illustrate how environmental upgrades can drive development.

Not true

No State in Nigeria, including Lagos, can survive without Oil money

PAYE is indirectly oil money; if oil stops flowing, commerce dies, and with it, PAYE. Less than 5% of Nigerians have N500k in the bank. This is with crude oil ooh; oya remove crude oil, and you can't pay salaries of federal workers, Police, Military, etc

The Nigeria of today has diversified its economy but not diversified its revenue sources

The weak Naira and low consumption are tied directly to oil exports

Let's remain humble

Distinguished, why do you always react as a negaholic to any positive news about Ogun State?

Ogun State is the non-oil mineral HQ of this country. This state alone s for 36% of Nigeria's non-oil revenue.

The state is the industrial and productivity HQ of this country.

The state is Nigeria's largest producer of Kolanut, poultry products, Cassava etc

The Governor is right, Ogun is one of the very few states in Nigeria that can survive without oil money or any other allocation from the FG if it stops flowing tomorrow. Relativity.

It's really funny that you believe so much in statistics -what you are respected for- until it favours Ogun State then you spin things around to make it look bad.

We welcome constructive criticisms here, if it's out of good faith. However, for someone who celebrated JB logo, who also argued that debt is revenue, there should be certainly a lot more to celebrate in Ogun State than in your own state, if you're being fair.

This is not correct.

Ogun is one of the states in Nigeria that is very viable. The state, if it harnesses its IGR well, has the potential to generate IGR sufficient to cover at least 80% of its operating costs.

From my little research, Ogun State is Nigeria's largest contributor of non-oil revenue to the federal government, ing for 36% of the country's total non-oil revenue. The majority of Ogun's non-oil revenue comes from mining activities in the Ewekoro Local Government, which has large quantities of limestone.

Ogun's other important economic sectors include agriculture, where the state harvests grain, rice, maize, cassava, yams, bananas, cocoa, kola nuts, rubber, palm oil, and palm kernels. Ogun is Nigeria's largest producer of kolanut.

And again, considering that Ogun State is home to numerous manufacturing companies, this industrial base not only provides jobs but also generates considerable tax revenue through corporate tax, VAT, and PAYE contributions.

While I will commend his attention to workers' welfare, I have to criticize the fact that his people literally had to beg him before he started the road infrastructure drive is currently doing despite Ogun always having high IGR for a good number of years.
