A suspect, Mr. Adewunmi Taiwo, 45, arrested by men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, for impersonating an officer of the agency has confessed how he made at least N750,000 in a month from unsuspecting motorists caught over traffic offences.

The suspect, who was arrested on Oshodi Bridge in a sting operation, has since been detained for further action.

Taiwo had been posing as a LASTMA officer to intimidate and extort funds from both commercial and private motorists in the vicinity.

Commenting on the Addressing the incident, LASTMA General Manager Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed that the suspect had been operating a white Hiace Coaster Bus with the registration number KJA 724 YJ, utilizing it as a guise to harass drivers in the area.

Bakare-Oki, explained that, “Upon a meticulous search of his vehicle, LASTMA officers uncovered an official LASTMA uniform, including a branded raincoat, among his possessions, confirming his intentions to deceive.

“During interrogation, Mr. Taiwo, who claimed to hail from Ilesha in Osun State and is married with three children, confessed to misusing the uniform to extort unwitting motorists, targeting high-traffic routes along Ikorodu Road and the Oshodi to Mile-2 Expressway.

“He further itted to generating between N15,000 and N25,000 daily from these unauthorized activities.

“The agency had received multiple reports regarding extortion linked to this particular Hiace Coaster Bus. In response, LASTMA’s Surveillance and Monitoring Unit was mobilized to investigate and subsequently apprehend the suspect.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to uphold LASTMA’s integrity and professionalism.”

Bakare-Oki, therefore, warned individuals who exploit LASTMA’s identity for unlawful gains to desist forthwith as “any attempt to tarnish the agency’s reputation will be met with the full force of the law when caught. The suspect will be charged accordingly.”

He reassured the public of the agency’s vigilant enforcement efforts to safeguard the efficacy of traffic management in Lagos State.

Bakare-Oki, urged all motorists to report any suspicious activities via LASTMA’s toll-free hotlines (080000527862) to aid in eradicating illicit practice among officers of the agency for better service delivery.

You can then imagine how much a real LASTMA officer would be making... especially those deployed to the extortion task forces. The new one with those LASTMA guys is that they have a cartel ring in conjunction with car dealers to seize and quickly auction off mid level cars (corollas, camrys, etc) especially as those cars are very valuable right now given the economy.
The controversial Lagos state traffic law that is the basis for this extortion has been there for some time, but now, given the state of the economy, it is now a brazen desperate smash and grab.
You don't have to break any traffic law for them to attack you and start making up stuff on the spot, and using all sorts of tactics to disorientate you, like bringing out their phones, pretending to be recording, and using well kitted policemen (part of the ring), to force you to comply. Because you're a middle class law abiding person, you comply, by trying to know what your offence is and try to resolve on the spot, but they are not interested in resolving anything, they will be asking you very coldly "did I ask you for money"?.. they don't want your money, they want your entire car., they are already calculating how much the car dealer will give them. They will hurriedly use those intimidation tactics to forcefully enter your car and drive it to Alausa... Once your car gets there, it's gone forever. The sequence of events will be like a film trick.. They will book it and immediately in a caravan.is a kangaroo mobile court (part of the ring), who will find the car guilty, and order it to be forfeited to the govt.
The they will organize a fake auction, where them them will pretend to be haggling prices, in the region of ridiculous millions that is far beyond the actual worth of the car...this is to ensure, you can't even try to buy back your car from them.
After that, everyone goes home, and them and their car dealers meet behind the scene to settle themselves.
