Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that he earns 14 million monthly as a senator, but the money is not enough to take care of his overhead and other costs.

Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Thursday.

He said that the money was not enough to cover his expenses.

Kalu argued that most senators were doing well for their constituents, saying he would never fail his people.

“I am doing my best as a legislator for my constituency. I will never fail in my duty and I am sure most senators are doing their duties in their constituencies. I can never fail in Abia North Senatorial District.

“I earn N14 million in a month encoming my salary, overhead and workers’ salaries. Let me be honest with you, do you know from this money I have to buy fuel to travel to my constituency? It’s not enough.

“When I was a governor, I voted for one term of six years. Obasanjo said I was after him. That was the beginning of our quarrel. I went for one term of six years because of the cost of election, because of the cost of managing the economy. As a governor or a president, their eyes are on re-election. They are not even thinking about what people will gain, what people will do. They are only looking for reelection. The only way to solve this problem is to do a six-year one term.

“It will go a long way in boosting their performance because the people think they need to make money for re-election in my opinion.”

Insensitive buffoon. If 14 mil remuneration per month is too short for you, then resign as a senator.

A British politician once resign from his post because he couldn't afford to pay an increase in his mortgage rate from his monthly salary.Instead of this unnecessary whinging, why not simply resign and focus on your private business that will earn you more money, but I guess reg sounds Greek to Nigeria politicians.

It won't still be enough, even if you earn the entire country's budget in a month. That's what greed does

On both counts, I understand and I agree with Mr Kalu.

Kalu might be a crook of some sort, yes. He might have been jailed in the past, yes BUT he is right on this one.

No politician of his status can survive on merely 14 million naira every month. That's about £7000 or so? Those who beg him for cash and the amount he has to spend to keep himself politically relevant each month is certainly more than that.

Secondly, he is right about the 6 year single term. This current style is not working. 4 years isn't enough to make any significant difference in office. The desperation for a second term as well as to install a successor often robs our politicians and political institutions of the necessary input to make our society move at the pace we need it to go.

Kalu is entirely right on the foregoing, in my opinion.

What Akpabio said in public to mock Nigerians emanates from other senators heart but he is the only one with the bullshit heart to say it..

He is a bloody liar. His salary is not 14M and has not been for a while. Between 2019 and 2022 I had the salary of three senators, being an officer with a tier 1 bank and working from a branch in maitama Abuja.

Then their salary was 18.7M that it total take home (Net). As at today my colleagues tell me it's almost 26M.

Why not keep quiet instead of lying.

This man set the trend of the downward trajectory in Abia State grin
He so much underperformed despite having what it took to perform better.
Nigeria is a huge joke, imagine someone getting paid N14m for doing nothing (allowances excluded).

N14m is small for you but 70k is well ok for others. These guys venture into politics for financial gains only. Make politics less lucrative and all of them will run. Pay them the 70k minimum wage they proposed and see all of them abandon their seats to go get busy with their lives.

The money looks very big in d eyes of the poor .
Imagine what it take to fuel d official Land cruiser 2023 bulletproof V8 engine together with d security Hilux and d official office bus.

Then d number of assistance in d constitency..
Everybody bring their problem once u come around and they must not leave empty handed once they meet u.

Don't even be surprised that some village people will arrange themselves from village and come to your office in Abuja to seek personal assistance. All you must attend to out of 14million.

What's this exconvict saying? Man that's supposed to still be in jail if Nigeria was a working country.

Nigeria senator and house of rep has offered nothing to Nigeria's development since inception of democracy, only rubber-stamping and stealing public money.

Why will it be enough for a professional parasite in the name of a politician who feast on the nation?
The more reasons they take horrible decisions and make terrible laws that increases the hardship and pains on the people yet they live virtually on free accommodation, food, cars, wardrobes, allowances etc. Yet they struggle to make ₦70,000 available for the average worker. Shameless parasites all over the place!
