Buying shares is the most useless investment in NG especially if you don't have a stock broker and knowledge about it. The only thing certain from such stock investments in NG is that you will lose at the end of the day.

Let's assume in 2009, someone purchased 2,000,000 shares at the rate of N2. This will be a total of N4M invested.
In 2024 which is 15 years later, the shares is currently at N11.
2,000,000 share = N22M + those petty dividends they paid.
Looks like a good investment.
Let's look at what who held dollar would have made just by putting N4M into dollars in 2009 when dollar was $150.
4,000,00 ÷ 150 = $26,666
In 2024, $1 = 1650
$26,666 x 1650 = N43, 998,900 (that's roughly twice the amount from shares in that company)
What about who gambled on BTC?
In 2009 bitcoin was $0.10
Just $1,000 would have given you 10,000BTC
In 2024, 10,000BTC = $672,344,400.
Only if we can see the future
the 44m naira now can't get u wat 26,000 dollar will get you in 2009

Not worth it at all! Someone told me this some months ago. Both parents even have unclaimed dividends too.
When you see number of unclaimed dividends running into millions, know say those dividend have little or no value. Last last, na those companies/banks cash out.

I have crypto..and benefited from crypto made my first million in crypto and participated in many crypto projects projects via ico...ido...fairlaunches...nft...but overtime I realise crypto investment is money you don't need in a long time and any money I invest in crypto I see it as gone in 202q the average I invested in any crypto project was 3 bnb or 0.1 eth some made me alot of money and others were rug pull I used all sorts of bots to get in first participated in yield farming ..I realised crypto is an investment vehicle that appealed to the young..the same way alot of ppl don't really know what web 3 future will be like..if u can catch the vision before others good for you...
We are basically saying same thing. I am bullish about crypto but there are need for investment cautions too. The last sentence you made, also makes a lot of sense. Everything in life is by risk. Web 3 may offer early adopters real access to financial freedom.

He didn't buy much shares to begin with, considering the price then in 2013 was just N1.65 per share (from a quick Google search) resulting in a total of N1732.5 for his 1050 shares. That seemed like a trial purchase rather than a solid investment for the future.
If he had put that money into crypto then I'm sure the return on investment would be in millions by now.
How do I put money in crypto

In a country plagued by extreme inflation and currency devaluation, not all investments are worth your time. Long-term investments in Naira ke? Your father get mind.
You could invest N1 million in shares today, and by 2034, that amount might only be enough to buy a bottle of beer (N2m for two bottles ). At least right now, with N1 million, you can still buy a brand new iPhone 14.

It is only a kid that could have said " investing is shares and stocks is a waste of time and money". But since you are claiming not to be one, sorry for my assumption. Maybe you are just an ignorant adult who refused to educate himself and has agreed to hold on perpetually to the ignorant end of the stick.
You are right. I am a kid. What an assumption! Just that I am a kid old enough to have bought shares during public offer of 2002, 2003 for himself and his children.
I would be angry too, if all I bought became nearly worthless or due to inflation ,had minimal increase in initial value.
Keep your energy for yourself and your kids.
As for your stocks and shares, happy investing.

You guys are lucky as the share value already dropped as at that time - your dad bought cheap.
I bought mine before then and it turned out to be the ultimate Scam - the moment Baba Iyabo moved his money, it crumbled. Transcorp then was promising because of Obasanjo - it would've performed if he got third term. Stock pros in-house, correct me if I'm wrong oo.
I think I bought for 20naira per share back then.

Before u buy any share or stocks from any organisation in Nigeria one, check out the live styles of the CEO's and other top management teams.

ppogba:
There was never a time Obasanjo put his money in Transcorp and withdrew same . This is just an unfounded rumour.
Transcorp only seized the opportunity of the shares public offering of that time even without the solid fundamentals to the public offer price the shares sold for. Besides, it was the cowboys at the time that packaged it for the public to chew

Whats the difference between shares and govt bonds and treasury bills. Are these three(3) things the same thing?
Krucifax:
The problem with people and investments is not doing proper research. Consider this. Most shares globally pay annual dividend of between 1-15% (when they pay oo!!) This also applies to the biggest companies in Nigeria. Some do not even pay if they've had a bad year of trading.
Also consider that percentage payment is not fixed and can flucuate year on year. Meaning some years they'll pay less and some years they'll pay more.
So for example if you buy shares worth of N100,000. Your yearly return will be between N1000 to N15,000 on average.Dependent on the company's performance that year.
Bear in mind percentage payment is dependent on share value!!! If the value goes up percentage return is high. If the share value goes down percentage is low. So technically speaking you can even lose most of your money.
The only people making real money from shares are those investing N10Million to N100 Million or more. In my opinion if you do not have several millions you are not using to spare it's not worth the effort. Because its an unguaranteed gamble. It's better to invest in government bonds or treasury bills or my personal favourite Property.

Not good enough...if u see the way Herbert of blessed memory and Tony and his wife buys shares you will realise they buy in billions which is on the High side, but I advise you start from hundreds of thousand of shares to millions of shares. Cos most nigerian companies dividend are in kobos/shares so you need a lot of shares to get something tangible. With the level of inflation it might be worth less for now but when n9geria starts working it will be worth a fortune...
Not even that, ask yourself how many people really get paid substantial amount of money during 2000s Bank recapitalization that the bank are selling shares here and there.... the thing is that many people don't know how these thing work, there is buy and dump in Nigeria share just like in crypto world so if you are buying for long time your investment will be liquidated , the purpose is to buy for some month after of you see some kind of increment compared to when you buy you sell/dump immediately... but many leave it thinking if i leave it for some years like 30 years or 20 years my 10million naira will turn to 100million but in Nigeria your 10million will turn to 00kobo....

To me ooh, Government treasury bills or bonds are better for investment compare to buying shares... have seen some people who invested like 5million naira on shares since 2005 and buy now he has nothing because most of the big man who invested billions of naira on the same shares quickly dump it once the see a significant increment in the price there by liquidate the low income investors, that is when the company will be coming with the negative balance for the year and as negative keep coming you can't get your dividend and your share price will be reducing... but on treasury bills or bonds I can say specifically there is one that will even tells you how much you will earn when you buy certain amount of it ... like they will tell you if you invest 10million naira they will let you know that after the tenure of such bill you will receive let say 11million that means they pay u 10% of your investment

BTC is now almost 65k, how many can afford it?
if you put 500 naira in btc today, you wont make any good money in the next 10 years
You people just talk any how
Whether you invest in crypto or the Nigerian stock exchange, you need to buy in large volume
Buying 1000 unit of a share or crypto wont make you any money
but when you buy 50M unit shares of a good company, you are likely to make *3 in the coming years.
if you are a trader, you are likely to make more every day, just by trading ever day in the stock exchange
The same goes for crypto
You make money when you buy in large volume

but you see buying shares, it is about volumes, that is why the rich investors always win because they can buy millions of shares and sell for profit, if the stock goes ups. Most big investors, do not hold their shares for long, they are comfortable with making double of their investment but you see those small time investors, they always want to buy 100 unit of a stock and make 1M naira, where is that possible?
