The Correctional Officers Pencom Retirees Association of Nigeria (COPRAN) has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Speaker House of Representatives, Minister of Labour, and Human Rights Commission, among others, over the worsening challenges faced by retirees under the contributory Pension Commission (PenCom) scheme.

According to COPRAN, pensioners are being starved of their funds by PenCom after retirement, leaving them with untold hardship and inability to provide for their basic needs. The association’s president, Mr. Anthony Ayiwulu, lamented that after 35 years of diligent service to the nation, retirees are only owed gratuities and unable to cater to their families’ needs.

Ayiwulu stated that the Nigerian Army had opted out of the PenCom scheme and their request was granted, citing the scheme’s creation of untold hardship for retired servicemen. He emphasized the need for the policy to be changed or reviewed for the common good and betterment of retirees.

In the current economic situation, retirees face numerous challenges, including the high cost of living and healthcare expenses. Ayiwulu urged the government to prioritize fairness in its dealings with citizens, including the prompt payment of civil and public servants’ retirement benefits, to help them cope with retirement.

COPRAN further lamented that senior citizens under PenCom have yet to receive any palliative to mitigate the hard economic situation in the country. They were asked to submit their information through their various Pension Fund s (PFAs), but there has been no positive response so far.

The petition is a stark reminder of the plight of retirees in Nigeria, who are often left to struggle with limited resources. The government must take immediate action to address the concerns of COPRAN and other associations to ensure that retirees receive the benefits they deserve.

This is unthinkable wickedness and evil. Civil servants will save pension only to retire and discovered it has been embezzled or fraudulent abused and no one is being held to ability.

This is so bad. After serving the country for years yet they still refused to let them enjoy life before they die. Nigeria is just a country we should gather weep for. All we do is pray and nothing seem working.

These Tinubu is a perfect description of evil and full blown wickedness .... since Tinubu became president he ask pencom to stop paying pensioner under the filmsy excuses there is so much corruption in that system

if their is a corruption in the system, you keep the system running to troubleshoot it not shutdown the system completely and staring at it.
if a tyre is deflating you pump air into it again to troubleshoot were its leaking from ... you dont consider re-
pumping done as waste

The bitter truth is Tinubu and his fellow politicians have eye on the pencom fund and they are looking for the slightest justification to loot that fund on opulence

A Pension Fund should be paying her not an insurance company except she opted for annuity.

Annuity leaves the NOK with nothing in the event that the beneficiary es.... sad

The contributory pension scheme has its issues, the law is flawed and dubious.

You cannot access your pension until you re 50years of age, even if you retire at 35 years, If you re above 50 and still working you cant access it.

But political office holders can access theirs anytime they want, they receive multiple pensions even though they're still working (abi chopping).

The real trouble is allowing govt to borrow from the funds, no we see the result. So, you see why civil servants try to steal because they see what happened to their seniors.

Our elders must not be subjected to any form of discomfort under any circumstances.
Having labored meritoriously during their youthful years, they're required to be taking care of forever.

you know the worse part, ones savings become devalued that by the time you are out, someone's contribution of 30 million can't even buy a house by then or naim Dem go use take buy moto

A relative on the verge of retiring told me that the government said they have "borrowed" the funds meant for pensioners. Imagine

Contributory pension is a scam!

If at retirement, your fund is over 500k, you cannot get it in lump sum, it will be splitted into meager amounts as little as 3k to be paid monthly till the money is exhausted. What a shame.
