State Governor, Caleb Muftwang, says the 19 northern governors in Nigeria will kick-start conversations on the explosive birth rate in the region.

He said measures must be put in place to care for the education and welfare of the children being born in the region.

“We are sitting on a time bomb,” Muftwang said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, warning that the lack of infrastructure for human capital development of the youth bulge in the region may escalate banditry and terrorism ubiquitous in the three geopolitical zones of northern Nigeria.

He also said some of the hoodlums who disrupted the “peaceful” #EndBadGovernance protests in the state were external elements from outside the state.

The governor said the elite in the north failed to take responsibility for the young population in the region, allowing some criminally minded persons to control the youth bulge and indoctrinate them into insurgency and banditry.

Muftwang said, “We don’t have an option. At this point, we must take the bull by the horn. I am pretty sure that a lot of the northern elite do not have their children on the streets; they send their children to elite schools locally and internationally.

“If that is the situation, it is not so much about how many children you give birth to, but that we must be able to put measures in place that if you give birth to children, you must take responsibility for those children. It must be a carrot-and-stick strategy that we’ll put in place.

"I don’t want to say this is the maximum number of children you must have. That is a dialogue that is beyond me but I can assure you that from the Forum of Northern Governors, we are going to initiate this dialogue. We are going to make sure we broaden it to a national consultation.

“We must know that religion has a responsibility to society and we must ensure that religion does not become a setback to society. We must then be able to bring religious leaders in tandem with global realities.”

The governor said the government will hold parents able for out-of-school children, assuring residents of the state that no willing child will be uneducated by the time he leaves office in 2027.

Muftwang said one of the key ways to fight poverty is agriculture and food security but unfortunately banditry has been a challenge. He said lands must be reclaimed and put to productive use to ensure food security.

I talked about this in one of my post and people thought it's just a joke. Nigeria really need to look into birth control before it gets too late.

Am surprised why a shoe Maker will marry 4 wives and give birth to 20 children in the name of religion. Those children are now grown adults turning to bandit now.

So finally them Don dey come to their senses. I have been saying this for years but no one listens, you can't keep pumping out children without the means to cater for them properly. Also over population means people will have to struggle for the available resources. Most developed nations today plan their population but the black man have a different mentally.

The North is worse because they use it as a political tool, now it has now turn into a weapon pointing at them.

This is the kind of news we want to read.

Nigeria is full of unproductive people who add no value to the economy.

Nobody should be giving birth to children they cannot cater for in 2024.

And the religion clearly states that if you know you can't be just (including taking care of and looking after them), then stick to one. If you can't manage even that, the Prophet said you should fast to help control yourself. I don't know where some are getting their own narratives; it is stated clearly.

Southern Kaduna, Kogi, Benue, Adamawa, Kwara, Taraba, Plateau and Nasarawa states should not be muddled up with the north.

These regions have no attributes of indescrimate child birth, resentment for education, extreme hate for a liberal society, continuous massacre of Christians, religious extremism and all.

I think, it is time for a regional government to be put in place.

If that's the only thing president Tinubu can achieve, then, so be it.

You can't keep riding on our wings to clinge onto power and then select only Fulanis who are not even originally Nigerians to and a few Hausas (Mostly Muslims) into good positions and leave the rest to their fates.

Enough of Fulanis trying to takeover our lands in Benue, Adamawa, Southern Kaduna, Taraba, Southern Borno, Kogi, Kwara Plateau and Northern Cross River.

We have distinct lifestyles. And we don't want parasitic relationships.

True, however these large number of children is what drives the politics in the north.

These children comes in handy during elections where u see underage children voting. In addition, there is a ready supply of a large number of uneducated children who could be easily brain washed by a few unscrupulous elite to do their dirty bidding to ensure they stay in power

Since giving birth to children has the backing in their religion, its going to be hard to sell this ideology esp as the elites and talalawas benefits from it

It is unislamic to give birth to children you can't cater for

Plateau Governor is a Christian Northern minority, the majority who are Muslims who actually have this issue of uncontrollable population explosion will not take this idea. Population is their politics, see how they are almost overwhelming Tinubu with protest. The politicians in the North need this population of mostly uneducated people to stay in power nationally.

What exactly belongs to them that is being mismanaged?

China and India that you mentioned, their GDP in a year is enough to power the economy of Africa for 50 years.

You are talking of welfare without productivity. Both go hand in hand.

You dey make 40k a month as a gate man yet you get 3 wives and 27 children, how hunger no go wire your head? When people with 2-3 kids making millions monthly still dey lament cheesy

Poverty and plenty pikin go hand in hand.

The population in the North is rapidly increasing, but unfortunately, there is a lack of corresponding progress in of productivity and education. We are having more children than our economy can . Our religious leaders seems to either overlook the potential dangers of this situation or intentionally ignore the possible problems this brings. No Islamic nation that neglects children and places such little importance on family life like we do in Northern Nigeria. Our way of life is always encouraging poverty.
