Hey guys. Can I get married in the USA if I’m currently married in Nigeria?

My wife and I are separated though, due to some cheating, which I can’t talk about here

I’m currently in the states on a b2 tourist visa and I’ve found another woman who I’m deeply in love with. I proposed and she said yes.
If you filled married in your ds160 form then the answer is no but you can the only option is to divorce from your wife legally then marry your current girlfriend. It's called bigamy fraud if you try to Marry your current girlfriend while still married to your separated wife.

why not file for a divorce before you enter another marriage? Did you report in your ds160 that you’re married?

Please, don’t ever think of doing fake divorce document, don’t ever try it because you’ll be roasting in a life denial.

I’m in a similar situation, my own case is even worse.

After 2 previous visa denials, the agent that helped me arrange my 3rd visa application indicated that I am married on my DS-160 form.

NB: I’m not married at all, I’m a single lady

He said that’s the best way to get the visa as the consular officer will see me as a “family woman” who won’t abscond but will return to her husband and kids

The agent filled in made up names of my so called husband

I went for the interview at Us embassy VI and I got my tourist visa (I was going for a conference)

I traveled and spent 3 months in New York and came back. I met a loving and caring dude there and he said he loves me and wants to marry me and file for me.

I’m currently in Nigeria, but my US bae has been asking me to come back over to the states so we can proceed with our marriage plans etc

I have a feeling that the “married” the agent filled in my DS-160 will affect any future plans of my future US based husband to file for me.

Please what can I do

Do the right thing, file for divorce. You can file for divorce from here and have to partner sign the divorce papers at the embassy, so it can be notarized.

Do not do a fake divorce, they will find out and all your stay here would be jeopardized.

not every marriage happens in a court. But beware of agent. They will ruin your life.

You’re not married and you are aware of the agents antics to add in your application that you are married. Now you got your visa and stuck with a married status.

You most likely should be able to use it there. International Drivers license is acceptable in some states. Texas is one because I know friends who come in for visit and are able to drive with their license

Really? And with what car will the international drivers license owner be driving with. You can't even ed a car or rent a car with an international drivers license.

No one talked about either renting or buying a car.

The conversation was, can I drive with my FRSC drivers license in Houston, Texas? Yes he/ she can drive

Just curious on the bolded, was this when you were in Nigeria or after you traveled? Did you ever cheat on her before you noticed she was cheating? I am asking because he who comes to equity, must come with clean hands.

You can not remarry unless you are unmarried .

Please ensure your first marriage is ended properly with your wife's consent/knowledge either through court or customary court whichever marriage you did.

If you go and package any supposed divorce documents it will affect your petition I t he US, . The USCIS will just hang it there in pending status.
They already triple scrutinize green card applications from Nigerian men based in the US whose application is through marriage.
GC through marriage is a long road na where e start you know..where e go end we never sure

That's my advice.

How long does it take for Abuja Embassy to print approved visa?

Someone shared with me that she hasn’t received her port since her approval June 6th.

She can always check the status of her DS-160. She might be going through istrative Processing.

True. Tbh, if you woman cheats on you, your job is to apologize and beg her not to do it again. Also, meet the man she cheated on you with and beg him not to sleep with your wife again. Otherwise you’re on a long thing and your wife will not be happy with you. Most men in the US, when their wife cheats, they apologize to their wife and stay committed. That’s a country that appreciate women and consider them human enough so their right will not be trampled on.

What if, in your marriage in Nigeria, you didn’t go through any court..but rather, you approached her family and paid the bride price and that’s all? If anything happen in such a marriage, do you still need to discuss it?

Did you state in your visa application that you are married in Nigeria? If yes, then you will have to divorce that person in Nigeria first, and have the divorce papers sent to you. This will come in handy if you need to change your status later on

The skills you listed are essentially Data Analyst / Data Scientist skills.

Indeed I'm beginning to pivot towards these. But it takes time to study and do the certifications and build a portfolio of projects to make impression with Hiring Managers.

What certifications would you recommend for Data? From reviews on YouTube, it seems Google Data Analyst Certification is a non-starter.

Just thought I can leverage my current skills in oil & gas and project management.

chidiakwari:
Do you mind sharing your profile? What’s your are your skills? Do you have any software skills? SQL, PowerBI, Excel, Python etc.

Check New Mexico

You need to pivot outside of Oil and Gas. Get some tech skills and it would be easier for you to land a good role

You have to divorce your imaginary husband the agent filled in your form, because it will definitely bounce back. Don't forget, they have all your details, so you can't claim otherwise now.

Exchange of bride price is a bonafide marriage recognized in Nigeria even if you didn't go to court so return bride price and get documentation from relevant customary court that marriage is dissolved.
If you applied for US visa as married then they assume you are married. If your wife also applied for US visa with your name as spouse then you are married .

Don't use a lie to cover a lie by getting a fake divorce decree cause you'll only rope yourself in further and they don't take it likely cause the document will be verified thoroughly(which unfortunately Nigeria have a bad record of document forgery) and if found to be fake you may get ban for years or life. They know most people lie about this to get approval for b1/b2, so they expect you to come clean. In this case I'll advise you file for the visa process while you're in Nigeria if you will do the fiance visa, that will show you're not trying to by the visa process, you'll have to get your family member at least 2 to attest that you've never been married and the you're very single, you will also go to the high court to do certificate of spinsterhood to further back your claim of never being married, all this document will be submitted when you go for interview and own up on your mistake about misinterpretation of your previous ds160 and back it up with prayer that the visa officer is lenient.

Quick question if anyone knows: Drop box application for B1/B2 application, can it be done by proxy in Abuja, or the applicant has to drop off themselves?

If you’re in US, try and get education or certifications. It would greatly help you.

Learn a skill. Don’t be complacent.

There are people who had zero IT background and are making 6 figures.

If you have opportunity to the military please do.

Thank you ma’am
Someone said I should say I did traditional marriage only not court marriage

And I should say my bride price have been returned back to the man

Since I didn’t do court marriage, a legal divorce is not needed

They told me to explain all this in a cover letter and also attach a certificate of spinsterhood to back up the claim that I am now single

If USCIS tries to if I’m legally married, no record will be found because I am not legally married

Pls don't do this. A traditional marriage is a legal marriage in Nigeria biko even if you did not do court .All those ppl suggesting this is unnecessary lie upon another lie.

You were not married so simply say you lied because you thought it would get you the visa. and add the certificate of spinsterhood as the person suggested .
