In a startling rebuke during a courtesy visit, the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, has categorically stated that Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata is not a "child of the Palace," contrary to Akpata's own claims.

The incident occurred when Akpata, accompanied by former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, met with the revered Oba in his palace in Benin City. During the meeting, Akpata repeatedly referred to himself as a "son of the Palace" in both English and the local dialect.

However, the Oba swiftly dismissed these assertions, stating that he had asked one of his chiefs to Akpata's claims, only to find that the candidate had no direct or distant links to the Palace.

"You are an industrious son of the soil, but to say you are a child of the Palace...I am not aware that any of my children is contesting or is a politician. So I need to make that clarification for the sake of the public and the fourth estate of the realm," the Oba remarked.

The Oba's unequivocal disavowal of Akpata's self-proclaimed status as a "child of the Palace" appeared to visibly upset the Labour Party candidate. Akpata retorted that while he might not be a child of the Palace, he was undeniably a child of the kingdom.

A member of Akpata's entourage later expressed disappointment with the Oba's public rebuke, stating that the correction should have been made privately instead of in the presence of the press. However, the Labour Party member acknowledged that as the Oba, "he can't be wrong."

"We are not really happy with the manner in which our candidate was rebuked by the Oba for claiming to be the son of the palace. In my opinion, any Benin or Edo person is a son of the palace, as we all came from the same source. He should have rebuked him in private and not in the full glare of the press and our guest. But he is our Oba, and he can't be wrong”.

Akpata erroneously introduced himself as a son of the Palace.
The implication of that statement was that a member of the royal family was contesting for Governorship.

Oba, through one of his aides, had to initially clarify if a member of the royal family was contesting for governorship before correcting him in a fatherly manner and even reassuring him he is a true illustrious, indigenous son of the soil.

There was no form of warning or dismissiveness toward Akpata.

In this present day and level of human advancement, politics should be played with maturity, decorum and facts. And not attempting to disseminate misleading information.

What embarrassment. Olumide Akpata wanted to be smart and tactically used it politically. Oba of Benin is regarded highly across the globe. We non benin in Edo state hold him in very high esteem because he is not sentimental and tribalistic. He is the father of all. Akpata want to whip tribal sentiment has a Benin man but the revered Oba knows were he was aiming at. Most Labour party candidates are know to play dangerous politics. Am not surprised of Akpata because Obi also used that last year. Thank to Oba for shaming him and the entourage. Benin kingdom will ever remain the most ired in Nigeria. His dad stood by Oshiomole's re election when some of his kinsmen wanted to play tribal politics then. Nobody can politicise the palace like it is been done in Kano because the Oba will not allowed any politician to influence me negatively.

The Oba was the first that openly endorse zoning for governorship to Edo central. That was the reason Apc have to rethink and pick a candidate from there. Labour party who pride themselves has a saint and Messiah did opposite. They taught if Obi ed them to visit the palace the Oba will throw . I like the way the were all humiliated. What stop Obi the leader of the party to give directions. He can't even settle less than twenty of the national leadership and want to rescue Nigeria. A statement has been ed. They will carry third as usual. The revered Oba can't be bought like some other places.
