I think it was the opposite. I don't anyone thinking Mr. Biggs was trash.

It was competitors that push them out (as they set unrealistic standards and were too sure if themselves).

My father applied, they told him he needed 4 million of in those days money (that would be 40 million of today's naira based on dollars exchange). Then they made some crazy demands like; it must be on a major road (they want it on the road, your property or rented building). People with that type of money are not usually patient enough to nurse a new business-location (they want profit today, those capable of running the show, can't afford the prerequisites).

They felt no one could beat them and overnight many Asians came with their own recipes. Nothing special. Just fry suger and rob it on the body of your finished junk-food, the end.

Anyway, 99% of my comic books back then ware sponsored by them and Guinness Mult.

Indeed, competition from other fast food brands led to a dilution of the market share. However the iconic Mr. Biggs brand still exists in form of other outlets especially in Lagos. There are two popular outlets with cozy interiors that I know of along Awolowo Way in Ikoyi, Lagos and Oba Akran Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos located within a fuel station.

Chicken Republic, Tasty Fried Chicken, Tantalizers, KFC all came in with robust plans to take parts of the market share from Mr. Biggs.

I recall eating a very bad meat pie at their zone 4 wuse branch that year.
I predicted there and then that their days were numbered.

Not true. Mr Biggs brand is still owned by UAC restaurants, a subsidiary of UACN PLC

The TRUTH!!! I was 'addicted' to their meatpie and sausage rolls. The fried rice as well until the early 2000s. They messed up big time. Got quoted in the stock market or so and expanded unnecessarily. Lost quality control, and they went under. Sometimes, expansion is a bad thing

You are so right, there are some businesses that need to be kept small and nimble so it will be easy to maintain standards!

I when my dad used to take us to mr biggs festac town in the late 90s. About 1h 30m drive from our house. Nothing lasts forever

Lol I eating my first meat pie in life from Mr Biggs, I didn't like it but my dad forced me to eat it because it was the only snack we could get on the go, now I chase meat pie all over town wherever there's a fresh well made one, I their meat pie used to be weighty with a lot of meat in it, not the crap people do these days and stuff potatoes in it and say it's meat pie, too bad all that is no more because of naija economy, they had to compete with chicken republic, KFC and the likes, they didn't survive it, normally you need to innovate and adapt, they refuse to do that, so it just died naturally, another brand heading same way rn is Tito, they'll soon cease to exist like Mr Biggs, I had fond memories of that brand growing up.

Lack of innovation, even if you are a pioneer in any kind of business, you must evolve and innovate as competitions sets in, people get bored even loyal customers do, there must always be something to bring people back a tiny new upgrade as at when needed but still retaining the old authentic aura, because humans are comfortable with what they know and can grow with, i think they allowed old loyal customers outgrow them, like me i love food, and i will own a resturant more like a village kitchen, where u embrace that ur growing up ur local delicacy, ur local drinks, if u squat or kneel or sit in any kind of way to eat traditionaly, then u served in such manner eg if na fura de nunu omo na calabash una go take drink, if na isi ewu nkwobi plate standard lol, with time i will infuse traditional music,drama,folklores etc the ideas choke na the funds man dy gather hahaha, because i go take am international too, i go use local dishes tell our kids our stories.

It's not competition at all if you ask me. The economy is the matter .

You actually think the demise of Mr. Biggs started last year abi? The Mr. Biggs brand started losing focus and and their competitive advantage over 10 years ago. They got so relaxed, drowned in their own success so much that it never forsaw a much competitive future. The downfall of the brand is very akin to the demise of Nokia in the tech industry. While Nokia reigned supreme in the early 2000, with the largest market share, other brands ( Apple, Samsung etc) quietly developed products that'll shape the future of the tech industry right under the nose of Nokia. Both Nokia and Mr. Biggs got too big and complacent. Their competitors adopted proper marketing strategies to upturn the market by leveraging on market surveys and customers to build products and render services that meet or exceed the demand of their customers.
