No, it doesn't work that way. The minimum wage is the lowest amount projected for the government and the private sector to pay an employee. If you're earning 300k, you're far above the minimum wage in Nigeria. The increment will not affect you.

WhiteNRed: Minimum wage and basic salary are two different things. Minimum wage is the lowest amount an employee can earn while your basic salary is part of other benefits that make up your CMS( consolidated monthly salary) which gives you your gross monthly salary. Your basic salary and other benefits can make you earn above the minimum wage, depending on the employer and the agreement. Minimum wage is the least a person can earn. |

If you currently earn above the minimum wage, your paycheck after the new minimum wage will not really add up. If you earn N150k, I'm sure the new paycheck will not be up to N180

The poster mathematics is very wrong and increase of minimum wage from 30,000 naira to 100,000 naira is over three times of the actual amount so it over 300%

For a simple understanding Remove the current minimum wage from Your basic salary, what is left, add it to the new minimum wage. That's your new salary. Eg. Basic salary 70k Current minimum wage 30k New minimum wage 100k 70-30= 40 100+40 =140 Your new salary is now 140k. SIMPLE 3 Likes 2 Shares |

AmiableMosquito:2019 minimum wage was graded. It didn't apply across board. Those who were earning below 30k were the ones who benefited most. For instance, corp moved from 18k to 33k. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Day169: Exactly reason we beg Labour to be wise in fighting for minimum wage with all efforts as if the effects on the workers can cure the inflation that will follow. Nigerians see it as a bigger addition, reason price of items goes up after minimum wage bill is ed but it's not. I love most private sector, they add to salaries every January no matter how big or small based on the inflation rate declared. But government is every 5 years with serious noise and fights with confusion. They should make it every year increment. 2 Likes |

dreamxhaser:@Embolden the increment isn't 70% but approximately 233%. For you to not know that explains why you asked the question in the first place. It's good that you asked cos you never would have learned. Now that's why it's good to ask questions. Now to your question. They will be an increment for those earning higher as well. If not why would they be fighting for it? They could just overlook and let the poor and less earners perish. You think they would give a hoot if they won't be any benefits for them innit? Dey play ![]() 1 Like |

Beautifulday:though I'm in full of your latter submission, but I must deviate in that simple economics made us to understand that an increase in salary will directly increase the purchasing power of the people and further inflation. The inflation this time might not be as overblown by the political class, but there will be a slight increase in the price of commodities. This can be checked if the govt reduces the volume of money in circulation. The politicians on the otherhand are the alpha and omega of inflation. 1 Like 1 Share |

If they eventually increase the minimum wage, it is only the incoming and future NYSC that would enjoy it. It would make ordinary workers to be interested in re-listing for NYSC. 1 Like 1 Share |

[PUBLIC SERVICE RULES AND FINANCIAL REGULATION MADE IT EXPRESSLY CLEAR FROM LEVEL 8 TO LEVEL 17 WHAT IS ADDED IS NOT MORE THAN 35% OF THE AGREED AMOUNT ACCEPTED AS THE MINIMUM WAGE THE ONLY SET OF PEOPLE THAT ENJOYED IT FULLY IS LEVEL 4 AND ANY OTHER LEVEL THAT FALLS WITHIN SAME CATEGORY. FOR EXAMPLE, #120.000 IS ACCEPTED AS THE NEW MINIMUM WAGE, CORPERS, WILL GET THE FULL SALARY INCREMENTS MEANWHILE, CLERICAL OFFICERS WILL GET A LITTLE REDUCED AMOUNT FROM THE #120.000 AND FOR SENIOR CIVIL SERVANTS, THAT IS FROM LEVEL 7 OR 8 UPWARDS, THEY WILL STRUGGLE BETWEEN 35% AND DOWNWARD... SO AS YOU CAN SEE, THE ENTIRE EXERCISE IS ALL A MIRAGE BUT UNFORTUNATELY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS MAKING IT LOOK LIKE, THE ENTIRELY AGREED MINIMUM WAGE IS WHAT TO BE ADDED TO EVERYONE SALARIES... I STAND TO BE CORRECTED ANYWAY I have been seeing a series of arguments regarding this minimum wage of a thing and I hope to get an insight from experts on something confusing me. Will there be an increase in the salary of people currently earning above minimum wage? Eg you currently earn 300k and the minimum wage is increased to 100k from 30k (about a 70% increase). Does that mean the person earning 300k will also get a 70% increase to 510k?[/quote] 1 Like 2 Shares |

That will be the job of the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission and it will depend on the Conolidated salary structure. The higher your Grade level, the lower the percentage increase. For example, in 2019, when the minimum wage was increased to 30K, the consequential adjustment for core civil servants ie Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) was: GL 07 -23.2 per cent, GL 08 -20 per cent, GL 09 โ 19 per cent, GL 10 โ 14 is 16 per cent, while GL 15-17 is 14 per cent 4 Likes 3 Shares |
