Senegalese President: Nigerian Youths Only Interested In Being PAs – Sowore (13244 Views)

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election Omoyele Sowore has faulted the attitude of young Nigerians to politics in light of the swearing-in of 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the Senegalese president.

Faye was sworn in at an event attended by several African leaders in Dakar on Tuesday.

While this has elicited hopes that other African countries especially Nigeria will follow a similar path in electing young people, Sowore says youths in the country are only scheming to become personal assistants to governors and other leaders.

"Our young people are concerned with doing what I call tag along. They are more interested in becoming special assistants to governors or senators,” he said on Tuesday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today. “I have not seen that clear aspiration on the part of our young people to become leaders.”

Sowore who spoke from New Jersey in the United States (USA), said Nigerian youths need to become more daring in politics to replicate what happened in Senegal.

“You cannot be young, mission-driven, and a visionary and go and hide your bushel under some of these old people who have no idea of how to even operate a phone,” Sowore said.

"Youthfulness is also important in the sense that you need leaders that are alert and capable and responsive and do not have to spend half of the time in the hospital,”
the AAC flagbearer said.

Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Not Too Young Bill into law, empowering youths to vie for the presidency and other positions.

But Sowore said the youths need to “take power” and not wait for any law to make that happen.

“You take power,” he said. “Nobody should give power to you by any constitutional amendment or law”.

Ofcourse not all Nigerians. It's a leadership issue. If you belong to group that worship traditional rulers as god, you will definitely be lead to dungeons.

This is a naked truth when a ritualist, murderers, and with subhuman brain is the ruler. We all know it. If you belong to a communities oba, emir etc control your sense of vote and development, catastrophy is the endpoints. those traditional rulers are enthroned by corrupt politicians

In 2023 general elections, youths grabbed power politically through their massive votes and for Labour Party "LP" but APC with INEC chairman rig them out. You're right Sir, but you forgot to understand that when desirable is not available, the un-dersirable becomes available.

Who is to be blamed now? Corrupt past political leaders is the only reason why it's still so Sir.

I left..!

Sadly
The old leaders are the ones suppressing the youths.
They've been stealing from the leaders of tomorrow ever since they realized power is sweet

Well that’s not true, we just don’t each other, a typical Nigerian will prefer voting an old tired man to rule than a vibrant young man or woman.

Sowore think he is still a youth. The old men have hijacked the leadership of this nation. If they don't decide to put youth in the seat, nothing for the youth except there is a massive protest that will take lives of people which we don't want.

I have listened to Faye and Sowore speaking, there is no comparison.
Faye is articulate, intelligent and doesn't make unintelligent and unrealistic promises like Sowore.
Also, let's not forget that circumstances lead to Faye's election. The out going president made it easier for the opposition to win by making some very oppressive and damaging moves such as locking up opposition figures, trying to run for a 3rd term and by trying to postpone the elections.
Those moves made it easier for Faye to win.
Also, Sanko was supposed to run but was barred by the govt hence he chose Faye to run in his place.
Faye is a President of circumstance.

true, but will the old political tyrants pave way for the youths to actually be in that position of power
just common protests alone the youths will be left with so many insults and discouragement

as long as our political leaders are not done looting the countries resources i doubt if dere will be any chance for the youths

Forget what Reno is known for o. In my country, That's the real fact. Fear, free money, nonsense entitlement, easy life, poverty, lack of critical thinking, lack of innovative idea has ridiculed Nigeria youths of today. After Gowon, where has our youth gone to? Can I be proud following my father to Senegal to inaugurate my mate doing the same job my 90yr old father is doing? And the only thing I can do perfectly is to carry gun and kill or kidnap my fellow youth? There's a problem in this country. Give us our Anioma state

And with you having nothing to show as an achievement in your life. Nairaland has really saved a lot of people from depression.
