Tell him that you just ed you have a friend in his state. that he should share your location so that your friend will come to his place to pick up. Even when he shares his location, have someone call him and pretend to be on the way. If he backs out at any point, then you likely have a scammer on your hands. But if he doesn't, let the person call back to reschedule on the basis of an urgent impromptu schedule change, then you continue from there.

Even if he doesn't back out when your phantom friend claims to be on the way to him, it doesn't mean you will not be scammed if you pay upfront. Money can change people. It just gives you some assurance that he truly has the item.
