The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has revealed that Nigerian nurses and midwives must have a minimum of 2 years post-qualification work experience from the date of issuance of permanent practicing licence before their certificates can be verified by foreign nursing boards/councils.

This revelation was made on a circular titled, Revised guidelines for the verification of certificate(s) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for practice abroad.

The council disclosed that nurses who apply with provisional licenses will outrightly be rejected. It also disclosed that all applicants who seek to relocate must have an active practicing license with a minimum of six months to the expiration date.

The revised guidelines, effective from March 1, 2024, aim to streamline the process and enhance the standards of nursing education and practice in alignment with global best practices.

Key Guidelines and Requirements:

Eligible applicants must possess a minimum of two (2) years of post-qualification experience counted from the date of issuance of their permanent practising license. Applications with provisional licenses will be categorically rejected.

The Council will require a Letter of Good Standing from the Chief Executive Officer of the applicant’s workplace and the last nursing training institution attended.

Responses to these requests should be directed to the Registrar/CEO of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Applicants must hold an active practicing license with at least six months remaining before expiration.

Applicants are required to visit the official portal at https://licence.nmen.gov.ng/ to and start the verification application process by clicking on the dedicated link.

A non-refundable fee per application must be paid through the portal for verification to Foreign Boards of Nursing. This fee covers the cost of courier services to the applicant’s training institution(s), place of work, and the respective Foreign Board.

During the application process, applicants are instructed to Certificates of Registration only; Notification of Registration will not be accepted.

Applicants will receive timely notifications via email and dashboard regarding the status of their verification application.

The verification application process is expected to take a minimum of six (6) months as against the 2 weeks it initially took.

The implementation of these guidelines officially commences on March 1, 2024. The council stated that all pending verification applications before this revision will be processed according to the previous guidelines.

Thanks chief.
Been trying to create a similar thread.

However,we say NO to this horrendous reform. It is tantamount to modern day slavery.
After spending 4-7 years with rigorous practice, without breaks during semesters in Nigeria, plus the exorbitant fees we had to pay during our training. We deserve better.
Do you know some nurses are offered 30k monthly salary? after spending millions in schools and for professional exams.

We thought that has always been in place and that is what the employer abroad require.
You can't just finish nursing school and immediately take the next flight abroad to start working with no experience.
They won't allow you make you come kill dem citizens nah,
You sef think am.

Our Research from Experience Nurses in 'the abroad'.....

Educational / Professional

In order to seek work as a foreign-educated nurse, you must demonstrate at least some of the following:

You graduated from an accredited nursing education program in your country of education
You are licensed as a ed Nurse in another country
You’ve practiced as a ed Nurse for at least two years before.
Some foreign educated nurses must demonstrate their proficiency with the English language by taking an exam such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic). There are exemptions depending on your country of origin

Just like what I wrote on Instagram a while ago

I this 100 percent. Infact they should make it ten years sef . The same with Doctors and Dentists. This should however be mostly applicable to graduates of government tertiary institutions funded through subsided education

However the government should also do better for medical personnel in Nigeria. Increase their pay and employ more hands not this nonesense government does every now and then

Typical Nigerian policy..

Instead of tackling the exact reason why people are leaving the country, they are instead working to prevent them from leaving... Same as forex policies, instead of tackling supply and improving production within the country, they're merry go rounding, blaming Aboki fx and students who are migrating for better life

This would just make Nigerian students head to neighbouring Ghana to study nursing

Instead of making working conditions conducive and attractive for the citizens to stay and work, they want to tie them down with ropes and chains.

Class action is the way out. The guys at the NMCN has no or little say on this. No amount of being called out can help in reverting this action. It has everything to do with FGN.
Take them to court.

Our healthcare is in shambles and has gone into coma, this is a ploy to stop nurses from seeking Greener pastures, why won't our healthcare practitioners run away when nothing is working in this country? They should also enact laws prohibiting political office holders from going abroad for medical reasons. We are not a serious country as our laws are made to suffocate the poor and the elites feed fat at the expense of the poor.
