I think too much respect (or reverence) for elders is why we are in such a mess in this country. You see old people misbehaving and you look the other way because they are old.

I'm neither his staff or friend, so if I see him today, I'll call him Mr. Elumelu because that's his name. Calling him Tony wouldn't be right even for his bank staff because that's not the official way to address people who you share no personal relationship with. "SIR" and "Ma'am" are there to be used accordingly when conversing directly.

Coworkers calling themselves by first names is merely to foster a degree of cordiality. Unless he explicitly asked to be called Tony by every staffer, there's no basis for cordiality with of staff who don't have any direct dealings with him.
