It's simply Neocoonialism. The African minds have been conquered. Not only the did the whiteman plunder his resources , he stole his identity too. The whiteman gave the black man new names , new gods told him the one he worships is fake , tod him the language he speaks is vernacular and even the clothes he wears are not it at all. So now the black man dresses like the whiteman , speaks his language as the official language , calls on the white man's gods , names himself after him and even yearn to be like him. This is why you see the mordern gen z parent naming their Nigerian Kids silly names like Brian, Tiffany and stupid names. The north are even the worst ,you don't even know if they have an identity or their own original names .... the desperately want to be Arabs so bad that the first name and ast names are Arabian names. Who will rescue the conquered black mind 6 Likes 1 Share |

Acidosis: You are so right, having a neutral name give you an edge anywhere in the world. Besides, Nigerians like making big things out of nothing. Europeans and Americans too bears names from other continents, and no one feel inferior about it. 5 Likes 1 Share |

In Nigeria, most parents prefer their children to bear their extended family name as surname. In recent time, religion has made most of these people to drop these extended family names as they believe it carries a generational curse which they may or may not know of. Most of these people bear their baptismal name and father's first name. For example if their baptismal name is Michael and their father's name is John then they will bear Michael John.

For the religiously naive people out there saying they changed their names after becoming Christians and going for baptism. Did these people know that Saul's name that was changed to Paul after salvation didn't mean both names aren't Hebrew names. Saul and Paul remain Hebrew names. So because you're a Christian doesn't mean you must bear Hebrew names. Christianity is not even synonymous with Hebrew as a language. 2 Likes |

Fountainofyouth: As long as they answer their surname, I don't think you have anything to worry about. For instance, a child can be giving 3 names out of which one will be English or foreign names. There is great advantage in answering a name that will not align to any tribe in Nigeria. I have many friends back them in school, if you don't see their Id cards, you will never know their tribes. |

Part of colonial hangover and inferiority complex, common amongst south south people and some northern Christian people. We have never heard oyibo bearing negro names, but black man family will even take oyibo name as surname or family name. Such people with oyibo family name are possibly descendants of slaves.❎❌❎ Compound such oyibo names with black manufactured religious themed names like 👉Blessing 👉Miracle 👉Anointed 👉Godspower 👉Genesis 👉Lovelyn 👉Chosen 👉King 👉Savior 👉Princess And many more. These are English names which oyibo sef nor dey use, but black man think say na him sabi the Bible God the oyibo wey bring the Bible📖 3 Likes 1 Share |

eepeepook:Complete the question, don't be biased. In other words, why also do some people bear: Abdullahi Musa, Muhammad Abbas, Isa Yusuf, Adamu Ahmed, Suleiman Ismail, etc? Because the last time I checked these are neither Nigerian nor African names but rather, they are Arab/Arabic names. 4 Likes |

yemmit90: You know, when having a conversation or referring to a person, you don't go about calling the persons surname but the name, imagine using English names with no obvious identity of his tribe, that's why I prefer our names to English, and when abroad, they are always fascinated with names different from the usual English names when they hear it, that's why I respect Indians, they do not compromise or water down their identity no matter where they are. 5 Likes 1 Share |

It is the influence of colonialism. Believing that the "colonial fathers" are better than the Africans. Such influences caused our grandparents to give their children foreign names. E.g: Johnbull, Clinton, Princewill, Macintosh, etc Lately, the influence of religion. Adherents want to bear the "name" that works for them. E.g: Confidence, Favour, Halleluyah, Blessing, Light, etc 1 Like |

When you go up North, precisely Southern Kaduna, Plateau, and parts of Nasarawa, the Christian locals bear the first name of their father as a surname. Unlike most Southerners who bear either the name of their great-grandfather or grandfather as their surname, this part prefers to bear the first name of their father as a surname. For instance; Mr. John Bitrus marries Lydia Bako, and their children will bear names like Matthew John, Hilda John, Euphemia John, and so forth. When Matthew John marries Jemimah Yusuf, their children will bear names like Emmanuel Matthew, Sunday Matthew, Blessing Matthew etc. In southern Nigeria, the reverse is the case, surname in most cases is usually the name most recognized in a family, not necessarily that of the direct father of the child. Some times, a family can bear a surname even up to the 5th, or 6th generation. 3 Likes |
