Believe me, it was worse. We were the last set that did post study visa before it was stopped. Theresa May was Home Secretary then.

Yes it was worse then. Imagine doing a 3yr degree hoping for PSW upon graduation, only for PSW to be cut short in your year 2. Then you have 4months to leave the country after graduation if you don’t get the kryptonite sponsorship back then. About 90% of people in a closed circle returned to Naija in 2012 - 14.

How did you go about this renegotiation ? I intend to do that with them too

Usually before your current contract expires they will email you to offer you a new deal or notification about changes in contract, If they haven't ed you then call them to ask about renewing your contract, they will give you options available, if you don't like any of them tell them that you will not be renewing at the end of your contract. That is when the negotiation will start,
Don't give up until you get what you want or close to that.

Regarding the bolded, while I blame the government, some students are not even trying at all. Ask them to apply for PSW and consider roles within their field, a lot of them will curse you. When I did my MSc., most of my classmates did psw and majority of them got very good jobs before they finished the psw. Sponsoring of visa was not even that popular then. I applied for around 500 jobs, got to 10 assessment centres before I got a job offer. Some of my classmates even applied for more jobs. When I was not happy with my job, I started applying again. I did so many applications, had so many heart breaks but eventually got 3 companies that wanted to sponsor me at the same time.

I asked one student who was complaining how many jobs he had applied to in his field, he could not mention 10.

People just want to get into skilled worker visa immediately. I was practically begging someone to send me his CV. He was just interested in getting COS from a care home. This is someone that studied cybersecurity.

Also, I have spoken to a lot of students as we have huge no of students in my town. Some of them don't even have a clue what they are studying. They hire people to do their dissertation and course works. Are those people students?

However, some students are still trying their best though and I am certain their hard work will pay soon.

People shouldn't settle for less is all i can say. It would be hard but still people are getting jobs with 40/50/60K with sponsorship.

One day i will get there myself.

1000000000% facts

Called up a friend some weeks back cos I didn't see him in class, Baba said he switched to care visa, from Cybersecurity Msc. I was shocked

Told two people I wanted to start writing my dissertation and they literally made fun of me for not outsourcing it. Do you think people like that have actual plans after school?
Just go to school, outsource class work, 0 certs, 0 internship, 0 experience from Nigeria. What do you expect? COS from care homes may be the only option

Too many funny things I have seen in this UK waka abeg

Are you both interested in Canada?

Canada has this year targeted it's express entry draws in its pursuit to attract specific skillset. Those in the select categories compete against likeminds and manytimes easier.
In licenced Healthcare with an IELTS score, cutoffs are approaching automatic levels

na you get time dey argue with that fellow.

The fellow's thinking and responses na dead give away for how he/she lacks depth of reasoning. I will even say not many, but majority of those flooding the UK na cos of the ease compared to Canada, US etc. Express entry or student visa for Canny dey extremely cumbersome or outrightly unattainable to majority of them, na the simple fact.

Should we talk about the looooooooong processing times for Canada, or the point based system that is mad competitive. You literally have to be young (under 30 or early 30's), with MSc, and French to even be on queue, but trust some nairalanders to be allergic to facts and truth-telling. UK runs wey you fit run everything in under two months at age 45 sef.

Shioor

I know a good number of folks who went directly to Canada from Nigeria as it was the easier route for them at the time

When comparing countries immigration policies, you need to first understand the underlying drivers.

Canada is a country of 40 million that lets in over 500k people yearly. When UK ended the PSW visa years back, it was the likes of canada that reminded them the market is hotly contested.
-The US satisfies most of it's labour needs by thousands of Mexicans and South Americans trooping and has the wage advantage to also feed off the UK and EU.
-Australia sits on vast reserves suppling many raw materials to China. Just like Canada, they have the wealth to scrape from the UK and other Western nations.
-The UK is not rich enough to source talent from any English speaking Western nation. They have left the EU hence no cheap European labour. They turning to Asia and Africa is not out of want but need.

I can also argue that many Nigerian that migrated to the UK using the student visa route in the last 2years are not qualified for the UK student visa.

But then again people will attack me. But let's examine it without bias or prejudice.

What's the point exactly?

Many Nigerians who migrated to the UK as higher earners would not have met the threshold for migration to Zimbabwe or South Africa. Does that in anyway make the South Africa more sought after?

Like I said above, folks need to understand the underlying drivers behind migration

Hi Oga Schoolhike,

I wanted to use this opportunity to thank you.

Got a success mail for the role of an Officer at DWP today all thanks to your tips on applying for civil service jobs as a way of getting into the professional sector.

Was beginning to doubt myself and abilities during this job search: hopefully, this is an opportunity I can build on thanks to you.

Lucky you then, happy to hear that.

I do advice people to start making applications for the next higher role once you get one role, should be AO I guess, start applying to EO OR HEO if you don’t mind, since you’ve got one already.

Advice lots of friends this way 2 were able to get another higher role before finishing their AO documentation.

Don’t relax ☺️.

Good luck.

Your friend can swtich back to Cybersecurity when he settles with full right to live and work in this country, nobody pins him down to health care work for ever. He is thinking outside the box which is what education gives you. You studied Cybersecurity and you applied for jobs with no positive outcome then what? You keep waiting until your visa expires?

I think it started a little earlier, my course mate got shell scholarship for MSc, he returned immediately after his degree, immediately! That totally put me off UK then before things changed...

My question is this.. if you studied a particular subject and applied for jobs with no success what do you do? Go back to school to get more certificate ? Go back to Nigeria to start looking for job? Thinking that you must work in the area you studied is outdated. Education gives you the exposure , the ability to make rational decisions.

Yes this may sound controversial but given the choice I will take health care sponsorship over PSW.

PSW should be avoided if you can, I will take it if that is the only option available.

This means you failed to read my initial premise undecided

The guy in question left school after 1 year to switch to care worker COS. He did not finish or even attempt to apply for jobs in the chosen career area before switching. If it were a course like Intl Business and the like, its very understandable

No one said not to switch to healthcare sponsorship if time is running out; not even attempting is what baffled me

His life, his choices at the end of the day

People will choose what they want depending on their risk appetite and how they perceive their strengths, ability to hold out / delayed gratification etc
