Economics, Bank and Finance and Management are the fields that could effectively handle a macro economy.

You don't necessary need to be an Economist, as long as you are from the above area of specialization and you're good at what you do, then no issues as those courses can easily be intertwined.

If Nigeria was a decent nation where public offices appointment are on merit, we should have been looking forward to people of PhD in economics, Mathematics, or mathematics/statistics for CBN jobs
