There’s a brother of mine who’s been itted to the hospital for about a week now. Man is pain. He’s always been diabetic but the foot got worse this past week and he’s been itted. Unable to eat and sleep. I’m really scared for him. Doctor gave advice that the foot is amputated to prevent the spread to the entire leg, but his families are objecting to this saying that they’d prefer to treat him. My question is, is it best to treat him or get the leg amputated? What are the chances of his survival doctors in the house? File Photo: for illustration 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Amputation could be the best way forward at this point, more especially if the sore has eaten deep into the tissue and bones.

Depends on how far the gangrene has gone and if it's determined the diabetes cannot or is getting difficult to control. Once it's determined to be gangrene, amputation is the best course of action to save the patient's life because you are looking at essentially a dead foot, toe or even leg still being harboured by the body. The "deadness" would continue spreading because it's caused by toxins that have essentially eaten up the flesh. They rapidly multiply and look for other healthy parts to continue guzzling up till they basically shut down the person's entire system. But of course,a doctor can only advice a patient on what he/she considers the best course of action to preserve life first and health as best as possible. The decision cannot be forced or imposed on the person so long he/she has been made aware of possible outcomes of refusing a course of management. Wishing your friend the best but still tell him the risk to his life, unless it's not gangrene. 111 Likes 10 Shares |

It can be treated but I don't know if there's facility for that in Naija. Ask your doctor... 1 Like |

It can be well managed medically except if it become severely infected or gangrenous.

HomoSapiien: Try a teaching hospital. Diabetic foot shouldn't just be amputated like that. The infection should resolve once the blood sugar is under control and he gets appropriate debridement and antibiotics Where's your location? Where's your location? 13 Likes |

Geeez. Sorry about that. I was watching a video yesterday about people whose limbs were amputated as a result of diabetes. They were abroad so it seems amputation is the best way to stop the spread. ![]() 4 Likes 3 Shares |

Why did he let it get to that level? Some people don't like themselves. I know people who have been diabetic for years and they have healthy legs. 5 Likes |

Please people don't get diabetes. Yes, you can prevent it. Be vigilant with what you eat and be active and be measuring your blood sugar regularly. Whenever I saw bad sugar level reading, I do blood sugar testing four to five times daily to know what works for me. 17 Likes |

doctokwus: This is on point. He does not have time. The sooner they amputate the foot the better his survival. If not the gangrene will just spread and kill him. 6 Likes 3 Shares |

At this stage, you can just pray. My Dad had his amputated last year and he didn't survive it. After spending over a million naira on surgery and drugs. I am sure he would still be here if we had continued managing it as before

was he not taking his insulin shots? diabetes MUST be well managed so it doesn't get worse cos it can lead to other very serious issues and even fatality. Go to a specialist or general hospital for advice. 6 Likes |

Hmmm! I urge that the family prayerfully take a decision about it. Medically, the Doc. Has given his advice and he knows that if not done... Ultimately Sha if the family believe in the Divine let them prayerfully take a decision on the matter. 2 Likes |

Chaiii... This really hits home ![]() While seeking medical solution, you guys should also seek the face of God concurrently. He is still in the business of healing. He has done it before; he can do it again. 35 Likes 2 Shares |
