The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Tope Ajayi on Tuesday said there were no plans by the istration of President Bola Tinubu to reintroduce fuel subsidy.

Ajayi made the assertion on X formerly known as Twitter at 6:08 pm WAT.

He said, “There is no plan to reintroduce any form of fuel subsidy. There is no condition to any increase in prices at this time. President Tinubu is convinced based on information before him that we can maintain current pricing without reversing the current deregulation policy by swiftly cleaning up existing inefficiencies within the midstream and downstream Petroleum sector.”

Ajayi’s comment followed news about a temporary reintroduction of fuel subsidy following the increment in the landing cost of fuel due to the free fall of the Naira in the parallel market.

Nigeria has continued to grapple with the soaring costs of goods and services due to the removal of the subsidy on petrol and the unification of the naira at both the I and E window and parallel markets by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

On Monday, independent oil marketers hinted at a possible increase in the cost of fuel owing to the increment in the landing cost of the product.

When i saw the previous thread, i immediately walked out without leaving any comment knowing that Jagaban is not chicken-hearted like a certain agulu toad who always dey reverse himself and delete his tweets anytime his headless mob dey squeeze hin rubber balls. The 10billion dollars a year greasing the pockets of a few greedy subsidy cabal would henceforth be diverted into other sectors of the economy. The policy may be biting hard temporarily but laced with tremendous futuristic economic benefits. It’s how it works; a candidate cannot seek to separate himself from his party’s successes or failures. Brings me to the main issue, which is Bola Tinubu’s attempts at touting himself as ‘pro masses’ by trying to failures and anti-people policies that have being since 2015. It doesn’t work that way.

Nigerians have unanimously agreed that the APC istration since 2015 is the worst of our lifetime. What’s more? Everyone (including APC ers) are in agreement that the Buhari-led APC Government’s Anti-people policies have made people poorer and more miserable.

BAT obviously has no idea what he is doing in government or simply doesn't care as long as he is president.

The manner of the subsidy removal is fraudulent, thoughtless & a sign of government's failure to be responsible to its duties.

Two key reasons for removing fuel subsidy are smuggling & the corruption by a few.

Now, what the government should have done first, in my opinion, are:

1. Do more to secure the borders. Invest in technology tracking & surveillance systems. Sanction security officials through whose sectors fuel is smuggled out.

2. Go after the cabal in the fuel subsidy sector. The private & public characters involved must made to answer for thier alleged crimes & the proceeds confisticated. They cannot be allowed to go scot-free with thier loot & Nigerians made to suffer.

Thier cases should be fast tracked.

3. Increase the price of fuel to 250-300 band. This will take a bit of pressure off government in the interim pending when it can fully sanitise the fuel subsidy regime. This price will still be affordable for majority of Nigerians without the need of providing palliative.

4. Review downwards associated costs/charges/taxes that add to the price of fuel in Nigeria. Tackle security bottlenecks & extortionists.

5. Immediately undertake a priority revamp of the refineries to get local production up to at least 70% in the first instance.

6. Institute a clear policy to encourage modular refineries & monitor thier development.

7. The confiscated properties of fuel subsidy bandits should be invested in maintaining the refineries, ing modular refineries, investing in tracking technology for smuggled fuel & paying for subsidies (if any).

That subsidy should go is not the issue, but the process of its removal must be transparent, fair & well-thought-out.

Hey dont deceive yourself, they are reintroducing fuel subsidy. This is government speak for subsidy, keeping the price as it is now despite market forces. Is that not subsidy?
