CBN clears air on acceptance of old Naira notes

Published on March 13, 2023

The Central Bank of Nigeria has cleared the air on directing commercial banks to dispense and accept the deposit of old Naira notes amid the raging currency crisis.

Dr Isa Abdulmumin, Acting Director of Corporate Communication CBN, in an exclusive chat with DAILY POST on Monday, clarified that there is no statement from the apex bank telling commercial banks to dispense and accept the old N500 and N1000 notes from Nigerians.

Abdulmumin was reacting to a statement by the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, claiming the apex bank had directed commercial banks to dispense and accept the old notes.

He said, “Governor Charles Soludo’s statement emanates from him, not the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Central Bank has not issued any statement directing banks on a collection of old naira notes. I am sure sometime in the future; the bank will issue a statement”.

CBN’s silence 10 days after the Supreme Court ruling validating the old naira notes has continued to unsettle economic stakeholders amid Nigerians’ hardship over the naira crisis.

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo had earlier announced on his Twitter and Facebook pages, as well as the Anambra State Government's Twitter and Facebook pages, that the Central Bank governor had told him that a directive had been given to commercial banks to accept and dispense the old notes.

Chukwuma Charles SOLUDO @CCSoludo

SPECIAL PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

Commercial banks have been directed by the Central Bank to dispense old currency notes and to also receive same as deposits from customers.

Tellers at the commercial banks are to generate the codes for deposits and there is no limit to the number of times an individual or company can make deposits.

The Governor of the CBN gave the directive at a Bankers’ Committee meeting held on Sunday, 12th March, 2023.

The Governor, Dr Godwin Emefiele, personally confirmed the above to me during a phone conversation on Sunday night.

Residents of Anambra are therefore advised to freely accept and transact their businesses with the old currency notes (N200; N500; and N1,000) as well as the new notes.

Residents should report any bank that refuses to accept deposits of the old notes.

Anambra State Government will not only report such a bank to the CBN, but will also immediately shut down the defaulting branch.

Signed

C. C. Soludo CFR.
Governor

Ipob pigs will be very happy with this development. To them, Buhari and Emefiele should continue punishing Tinubu. grin

One idiot was with one abokki who uses POS machine for his petty trading yesterday. The abokki was also getting paid by some customers in cash. The idiot was ionately begging the abokki to help him with 2k cash so he transferred to the abokki. I quickly asked him, "but most of you ed the cbn policy because of Tinubu, is Tinubu still feeling the heat"? He didn't respond but continued begging the abokki. At this point, I told the abokki not to listen to him because of his position on the policy.

The abokki immediately responded that I shouldn't bother myself, the clown can continue wasting his time, when he is tired, he will get his sorry arssss out of his sight.

Now this is beyond the ridiculous!

What does this guy want to achieve? What's the endgame? Is it his ego at play here or what exactly?

This policy is killing the hustlers in Nigeria. Livelihoods are at stake

Nigerians should stop being stupid and call the bluff of Emefiele and his boss buhari by enforcing the law as prescribed by the supreme court ,by Continuing to use the old naira among themselves and ignore the cbn with time the cbn will agree with them or when they leave the new government will do the right thing
To ease things for now the people should continue to accept and spend the naira forget Emefiele for now the law is on your side

Nigeria jaga jaga everything scata scata poor man dey suffer suffer.........

This is what Nigeria looks like now.
Seriously I don't even know who to believe again since Supreme Court have sold their mandate to the federal government, no body obeys the law again, when i was in secondary school, I was told nobody is above the law but today i clearly can see that government officials and their families are above the law.

Imagine how useless Supreme Court order is in Nigeria. Tinubu needs to change things in Nigeria because i know he will still be victorious in court.

CBN is moving mad! The fuccking election has come and gone. Why are you being utterly devilish by subjecting millions of Nigeria citizens to deep and daily agony? You keep their cash perpetually out of the reach. Make them against wish to purchase currencies. This all round evil, sinful, iniquitous, depraved, vicious, corrupt, vile, nefarious, pernicious, and destructive,
