NwAnne, an average Nigerian sees a health worker as a gentleman that can easily be intimidated. In fact na me dey even give patients relatives good slap when they mess up with cases at home before coming for 'better management'. As per say na we be damage control room. That is why i said no doctor should jump protocol for any patient out of pity. If a patient needs to do medical tests that are not available in the country, he should ask patient to go and do it through referral system. If patient needs to buy certain drugs that are not available in the country, they should order it from abroad.
How much are u guys paying for consultation? To see a lawyer i know how much some people are paying. I know how much people are paying to settle cases in police stations.
In saner societies, medical prescription is not free. Consultation is not free. It is either you or your insurance or government pay for it.

Some doctors are bad.

Long time ago I had severe nose block, I breathed with mouth. I went to private hospital, after many times visit without healing, the doctor said I should go to general hospital to see nose specialist.

At general hospital, I was told I needed to see general practitioner to assess my condition and if necessary he would direct me to see nose specialist. The general practitioner I was directed to told me that my condition was easy to handle, he wrote for me to buy some few medicine and I should come to his private hospital in the evening to treat me properly.

I felt like slapping him.

At the end a cousin recommended shea butter and rob to clear the nose. It worked well.

I understand you perfectly. Just yesterday 1st January 2023, a relative destroyed properties in FMC Owerri ward 8 and pursued all doctors and nurses with weapons. What was the cause ? The patient on ission was going into coma and needed immediate attention but all the calls to doctors, fell on deaf ears till when they couldn’t save the patient again . Most of our health workers are nonchalant.

If you feel a health care provider is responsible for the loss of your sister, you have an option of writing the licensing body and make your complaints. The case will be followed, and if found guilty, necessary measures will be taken.

Yes it is a call for service. You can also collect free drugs in pharmacy and do medical tests inluding imaging free in the labs without paying. Oh yea. Doctors should not pay for any utility but get them free. Doctors can enter any supermarket and pick any item free. That is definition of call to services. Even pastors use private jets. You guys can pay #50k tithes every month but you cannot pay for medical services, go and use anointing oil then.

There are incompetent professionals everywhere: incompetent engineers, plumbers, lawyers, doctors, etc. Generalizations are bad, any day, anytime.

There are great Nigerian doctors that do a whole lot for their patients. There are docs that make a lot of sacrificed for their patients. There are great Nigerian surgeons that perform magic in the theatre even though they don't have all the equipment.

If you have a bad experience with anyone, address your issue(s) with that person. Don't go generalizing and saying all what you're saying here.

However, it's not just about the healthcare practitioners... It's the system of poor leadership and management.

Under normal circumstances, there should be checks in place to ensure that these people do their jobs properly... They misbehave because they feel or even know they will get away with it.

And if the doctors abandoned their patients to come to attend to your own relative, what are the relatives of the abandoned patients supposed to do?

There are few doctors on hand and they work long hours with a ton of patients to see. The average doctor in LUTH for example is seeing nearly 50 people daily. Where are they to find the time to attend to everybody?

Nigerian doctors, the vast majority are very unprofessional.

The bastard called Chima Ihueze ranting on Twitter knows Nigerian doctors can't practice abroad the way they do here with nonchalant attitude and disregard for patients.

My friend's dad who was shot by robbers in 2011 died because of the nonchalant attitude of the doctor and the nurses at Annunciation hospital, Emene, Enugu state.
