A consortium led by Portugal's builder Mota-Engil and two Chinese ventures has been shortlisted by Nigeria's Lagos state to build a $2.5 billion bridge that is expected to relieve severe congestion in the mega city, an official said on Sunday.

The 37 kilometre Fourth Mainland Bridge, will be built under a public-private partnership. It will include three toll plazas, nine interchanges and a design speed of 120 kilometres per hour, said Jubril Gawat, a senior spokesperson for the Lagos state governor.

Mota-Engil is partnering with China Communication and Construction Corporation and China Road and Bridge Corporation in the bid.

China Gezhouba Group Company and China Geo-Engineering Corporation t venture and a consortium led by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation are the two other shortlisted bidders.

The winner of the bid will be announced before the end of the year, said Gawat.

You obviously don't know the magnitude of this project or are just willfully ignorant. The road to my base in Lagos has been bad for more than five years. I can gladly wait for another 5-10 years before govt. fixes the road if they can deliver 4th Mainland Bridge within the same period. At least 50% of all congestions will be reduced. I'm certain of that.

Babangida was magnanimous to have completed 3rd mainland bridge without one single toll gate on it.

Land prices and real estate values on BOTH shores connected by this new bridge will go through the roof the instant this project takes off in earnest. An acquaintance of mine who bought land on the "rural" Ikorodu shoreline decades ago, is now salivating like Pavlov's dogs, over the news of this new bridge project commencing to ultimately link his parcel of land to the Lekki shoreline corridor, one of the priciest areas of land in all of Africa.
