Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State has officially flagged-off the Kano city mass transit scheme.

At the launch on Sunday, the governor commissioned 100 buses and 50 taxis, saying the mass transit project was aimed at addressing transportation challenges along Jogana, Yankura to Janguza corridor.

The 100 buses and 50 cars painted with green and a stripe of white are to commence operation immediately.

Speaking at the occasion, Ganduje, said the construction and extension of many roads, flyovers and underes and many other infrastructures are considered necessary for the commercially viable and industrious city.

“To ensure effective and sustainable benefits of the investment and functional transport infrastructure need to be provided for an efficient Mass transit system that will fit into the new prolific city like Kano.

“Hitherto, the absence of efficient mass transit has given rise to the proliferation of Tricycles as the main public transport vehicle in metropolitan Kano. As the consequences of this scenario, traffic congestion has reached critical level while security of lives are becoming a great source of concern.”

Ganduje added that the Kanawa bus service will commence on pilot basis with the 100 high capacity buses procured at the cost of N2.5 billion.

The service is going to be operated by private operator to ensure efficiency and effective management on a public-private partnership, the governor said, adding that additional 200 buses are to be provided in the next year’s budget to cover other corridors.

“To achieve this directives, we have directed the state investment and properties limited to invest in the new taxis and give to on hire purchase to the of the Tricycle associations to be displaced from the pilot corridor.

“This component of the scheme will be revolving until all the corridors are fully covered by this service.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the organising committee, Engr Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, while presenting the buses, appreciated the effort of the governor, urging stakeholders to take the project to the desired stage.

He said eight local government areas of the metropolis will see the pilot take off of the service while calling on investors to key into the developmental initiative.

Lets have a little clarity here.

1) The first auto assembly plant in Nigeria was built by General Motors (Bedford) in Lagos in 1959.

2) The Federal Military Government wanted Nigeria to be a producer of automobiles so it went into t venture businesses with some foreign auto makers and state governments. The foreign auto makers were the technical partners, the state governments provided land and got around 20% shares in the business, while the Federal Government was the majority shareholder.

3) These assembly plants were:

a) Peugeot Automobiles of Nigeria (PAN), Kaduna.

b) Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON), Lagos

c) Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO), Enugu (they made Mercedes Benz trucks and buses)

d) National Truck Manufacturing Company (NTM), Kano (they made Fiat trucks and tractors)

e) Leyland Motor Company, Ibadan (they made Leyland trucks and buses)

f) Steyr Motors Nigeria, Bauchi (they made tractors and infantry vehicles for the Nigerian Army).

4) President Obasanjo sold Federal Government shares in these companies.

5) The state governments still have shares in these companies and they have been working hard to ensure that the companies return to full production.

6) Some of the companies that bought the Federal Government shares are not able to run these companies properly and so state governments have been working hard to ensure that other companies take over the plants. For example, Anambra and Enugu state governments have worked hard to ensure that Godwin Okeke (G.U. Okeke) and others take over ANAMMCO, while El Rufai is doing everything possible to ensure that Dangote takes over PAN. Fashola worked hard to ensure that Stallion Motors revived VON and that BRT buses were assembled there.

(Stallion Motors also took over Leyland Ibadan)

naptu2:

The process of getting Amcon to hand over the PAN plant to Dangote and the Kaduna State Government was too difficult, so Dangote approached Peugeot S.A (Stellantis) in and got a license to build a new Peugeot plant in Kaduna. That is the plant that will be commissioned by President Buhari today.

(AMCON took over the shares of the former owner of PAN because they couldn't repay their debts).

Private sectors are just going down day by day in this country.

We don't have enabling environment for Private sectors to thrive

And Government can't also probably run a company or corporation successfully.

We don't have maintenance culture in this country too.

We have toooooooooo many problems in this country.

I don't think it can be solved in the next 1,000 years.

Nice to see a state emulating good developments as Lagos. The others are sleeping waiting for monthly alawee

Anambra should work on generating more revenue for itselt instead of being a liability. I couldn't believe that even Edo state generates more than anambra. Shio

Terrorist are trying to set their corruptible record straight now that their journey has come to an end.

A better and new Nigeria is what we yarn for, not painting of old buses for pictures and media presentation.

The problem with the mass transit scheme is not the launching...but the maintenance.

Within a few years, all the buses are going to be scrap, and the thing will fail...because the people of Kano won't pay the kind of money...either in fares, or subsides...that would be needed to keep the thing running.

I bet that the standard fare would be less than 200 naira. Meanwhile, Kano state does not collect enough in taxes, and the revenue from oil is not enough for a big state like this.

If i suggest that Kano people should pay something like 700-1000 naira per trip as fare, many people will shout 'We are poor'. Well, at the end, you get what ye pay for.

Those buses look fantastic. My concern is what will become of the in the coming months.

We have unhealthy culture of neglect. I hope these buses will be well maintained.

The only successful way to run such
a system is to hand them over to private
individuals to run & pay the government
on a monthly basis.
✌️✌️✌️
The private people will hire staff and pay
the staff and remit an agreed amount
to the coffers of government and the
buses will remain within the premises
of the Government.☑️☑️☑️

After a certain amount has been paid to
government, the buses can be sold off to
the operators & government can replace
with newer ones.✔️✔️✔️

If government decides to appoint a civil
servant to run this, give it 2 years for the
venture to collapse because of corruption.❌❌❌
