Barely three days after a boat accident occurred around the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, where two engers died, another boat accident took place on Friday night around the Mile 2 area.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by Mrs Sarat Braimah, Lagos Area Manager, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

She informed that 16 engers on board the ill-fated boat were yet to be ed for.

“At about 7.45 p.m., on July 8, the National Inland Waterways Authority and the Lagos State Waterways Authority received a distress call of an incident on the waterways.

“A W19 enger Fibre boat carrying about 16 people capsized along the Ojo area of the state.

“The boat from Mile 2 to Ibeshe in the Ojo axis broke the waterways rules of late travelling by setting sail at 7.45 p.m.,” she said.

Braimah said the tide of the water drifted the boat to a stationary barge, which caused it to overturn.

“It is said that all engers on board, including children, were not all wearing their life jackets.

The rules says no night travel by boats in Lagos state, and always wear your life jackets, but Nigerians remain dumb to this simple rules and instructions,
They will just continue to die avoidable deaths, I know many ignorant ones will still fall victims of this simple rules

What are the safety systems put in place by the Lagos state govt regarding ferry transportation? The frequency of accidents shows there are huge gaps!

Wearing of life jackets on a boat journey should be mandatory. And for some of this guys not to wear means that whoever is in charge did not enforce its wear by the engers or not enough jacket was available. Why ??

But why would someone risk a journey on boat at that late hour and no life jacket..it’s sad to know that people don’t even value their life..RIP to the dead

Sometimes most of these accidents can be avoided, carelessness is involved and the regulators both on land and water are not doing enough. May their souls rest in peace.

After a beach hangout party we had one day at 7up Island...while coming down from the ferry at the Lagos state jetty terminal.. Noticed the terminal officials talking to some group of new people telling them the terminal is closed for the day no more boat sailing.. He gave some life prevention reasonings but still ....na engers wey dem dey try save their life con dey beg them make them allow them to go... Nothing wey we no tell this people abt the danger in traveling by boat in darkness oo... Na still dat same ibeshe



Make we dey try put safety protocols in our party and social gatherings also... Even if it's an overnight party pick early hours for meet up point... Arrive in time or stay in your house..

This country is really messed up. Everything is not working in this country. What kind of country is this? Here in NY many of us here use ferry https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/staten-island-ferry-and-statue-of-liberty-new-york-picture-id518730609?s=612x612. And the safety in place is enormous. The ferry is serving Manhattan bound to Staten Island and the safety in place is great. Honestly Nigeria is not fit to be called a state.

How can u enter boat wit no life jacket ni can't swim this sounds life they went to be used for sacrifice for the water gods.

Please if you always travel by water in Lagos. Endeavour to wear authentic life jackets. (Not the one they give you at the boat terminal. Go and shop for authentic one). Acquire some swimming skills and do not travel at night.

My broda safety rules helps.but I tell u those funny stuff u see Na just fancy not life jackets,I tested one those days at a jetty,u sink with it,I have to go buy a standard floater at Marina.
Is a pity this happened but I thank God for those 5 years i used them,thou many scary experience
