President Muhammadu Buhari is backing the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as his preferred aspirant ahead of the National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) billed to hold this weekend in Abuja.

A senior presidential aide who disclosed this to our correspondent yesterday said Buhari strongly believed that having worked closely with him since May 2015, Osinbajo is the best aspirant to continue with the policies of the istration.

The president is also said to be impressed with the way the Vice-President has piloted the affairs of the country during the period he held fort as Acting President.

He said this backing by Buhari is responsible for the confidence Osinbajo has exuded so far in the race for the presidential ticket of the party.

Speaking further, he said following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), some power brokers in the APC tried to project Senate President, Ahmad Lawan as their best so as to rival Atiku in the North but their proposal was rejected.

"As at today, Tuesday, the President is firmly behind the Vice-President as his preferred aspirant. He has refused to shift ground even after some of his kitchen cabinet started rooting for Ahmad Lawan after the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as PDP presidential candidate".

" Some northern powerful forces and religious leaders are pushing for a Northern candidate while others are behind the moves to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the race so that he can serve just one term and return power back to the North in 2027 but Buhari is not buying into all that".

"Those pushing for Lawan had argued that since Atiku is from the North East of Adamawa, the APC should also present its candidate from another North- East state but the proposal was quickly shot down by some concerned stakeholders who also have the ears of the President".

"Those against Lawan argued that if fielded as APC presidential candidate, the election will be a walkover for PDP and Atiku as he will even beat the Senate President hands down in his home state of Yobe. The only place Lawan is popular is in Yobe North Senatorial District" our source said.

Realistically speaking, neither Tinubu nor Osibanjo can defeat atiku in the presidential election. The reason being that Peter Obi is still running the race in a third party. Peter Obi will siphon most of the votes in the SE/SS annnnnd, alot of progressive yorubas will also vote for him, when you consider that osibanjo has been part of this government that has decimated nigeria. If we are projecting that Atiku will win atleast 65 percent of the votes in the north, then the only southern candidate who can win him must be one who can drain igbo votes. Yes igbos usually vote less in election times, but the igbo vote is looking like what will be the swing vote this election if the apc picks a yoruba candidate.

All Atiku has to do now is pick another igboic VP and its game over, which ever way you look at it.

An alternative for APC might be that they pick Amaechi, who then picks a very strong northerner like El rufai or Prof from Bornu. Amaechi might be able to drain igbo votes from Obi, with a huge from the SS and maybe 15% from SW.

Point here is, now that Atiku is the PDP flag bearer, and obi is still running, If APC wants to win the presidency they will be making a risky move picking a Yoruba candidate. If Peter wasnt running alot of igbo progressives would vote for Osibanjo and that would be the needed push to defeat atiku.

Apologies to anyone who considered this a slight on the great yoruba race, that was and is never my intent, I was just stating what appears to be the obvious mathematics for those wondering and its all but my humble opinion.

Buhari is a confuse man.. After 7years he is still not sure of his candidate. Last time he said on TV he does not want to reveal his preferred candidate, and now we are hearing he needs Governors to him in choosing this man is way too confuse,no wonder Nigeria is doing so badly under him

He has never been to for rehab, except the UK and US.

There was a fake propaganda viral video of Tinubu's alleged escape to during the EndSARS, but I immediately detected that the police vehicles in the fake viral WhatsApp video had British number plates not French number plates, and the man in the video wasn't 'Bola Tinubu! Tinubu was in Ikoyi, Lagos all along and did NOT escape to as alleged.

Buhari trusts Osibanjo more. They have worked together for the past 8 years. He may also think that Osibanjo will do whatever the North wants him to do - This thinking may be wrong though.

If APC fields Osibanjo, I doubt if PO has a chance. It will be a tough competition.
