First, find people of your same level to hang around with, that can explain things in your own (experts explaining things over your head really sucks). Second, get a Raspberry Pi. Start "sysing" the Raspberry Pi. Find fun projects. At some point, start playing around with networking on it. Explore all the fun command-line tools, like 'traceroute'. Use 'openwrt' as your home router and "net" that heck out of that. Now install web services on your RPi and play around with that, watching how your web server can serve raw HTML containing CSS and JavaScript. Create your own website. Now buy a domain name and push out to an AWS server. Make a LAMP app that serves stuff from an SQL database. Now hack your server with SQL injection. Keep playing with bad server-side scripts until you get good at SQL injection. Play with Chrome "Developer Tools" to explore how websites construct their web pages. Now it's time for JavaScript. Spend some time learning abstract programming language theory with JavaScript as well as practical fun with it both inside the browser ("Developer Tools" again) and on the command-line ("NodeJS"). My best learning came not from mentors, but from people my own level. They, too, can suck, I still bitterly resent that 18 year explaining 'arrays' to me in a totally messed up manner when I was 14. But it's through talking about such things that we acquire knowledge. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

In this particular order. 1. Understand Virtual Machine 2. Understand C and C++ {You don't have to be a guru, infact you may not need to learn to write code with it, just understand these language so that when you see legacy software written in these language you can understand them} 3. Master Python Programming Language {this is a must} 4. Install Kali Linux and or Parrot OS. 5. Understand Linux, I mean understand what sudo is, apt, Linux command line, list of Linux commands etc. With these you should be okay, at least for beginner level. Know that the journey might be tough, I mean you will looking at logs majority of the time, pentesting nor be beans oo. Don't think I am discouraging you, I just dey halla you wetin you for expect starting out. I am not a pentester but I do baby hacking once in a while. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

post=106596482: What is worth doing is worth doing well, a college degree is a must if you want to be paid adequately for your skillset. I don't know how it is done in Nigeria but abroad bachelors degree is now like high school certificate, nobody is going to pay a software tester, security or architect 70k to 120k dollars a year without a degree. In Nigeria I think they are paid 300k to 500k a year and even then they expect you to have a degree with 7-10 years of relevant experience, let's not give this guy false hope! 1 Like |

To the opening poster, do you have any background in I.T? If not then you're on a long thing. For you to even think about penetration testing, you must understand networking, threats and vulnerabilities. A penetration tester is basically someone paid by the company to exploit every system within the company looking for vulnerabilities so that the company can improve its security posture. It is not an entry level job, it requires vast knowledge and heavy workload. Before thinking about penetration testing, start thinking about ethical hacking. What type of hat do you want wear? I don't mean cap or the ones aboki wear but whether you want to be black hat, white hat or grey hat. I wish I could give you definitive advise but you're well over your head, you need a solid foundation first before thinking about penetration or beta testing. 4 Likes |

![]() To become a penetration tester in Nigeria is quite easy but there are certain things you need to acquire or do. First, your gbola must not be less than 7 inches. A long sleek gbola is a plus. You also need to write to the association of virgins chairlady in your state to grant you license or clearance. A first hand experience with Oloshos is a plus. You might have tested different grades of kpekus all around. that testing of these kpekus is done without wearing rubber. So you have to be careful because the job is very hazardous and risky especially with Nigerian clients. Also that no matter the skill you acquire in penetration, you can never get to the bottom of the kpekus especially if the lady is slim. The well is limitless. I wiah you the best as you start. Incase you have any challenges, you can always reach out to me. I have been penetrating for twelve years. 5 Likes |

The best way to go about it is to learn the basics. Mind you, you will not become a penetration tester in a year. You need lots of practice. Learn basics like T/IP protocol (Important), Linux OS, subscribe to some YouTube channels for good tutorials, textbooks. You can also study forums like HackTheBox where you get to learn the practicals. Pentester academy is also another good place to study to become a penetration tester. I started my journey of becoming a penetration tester in 2016. HackTheBox, YouTube, Cybrary, Pentester academy, books like The Hacker playbook 1&2, Penetration testing: Introduction to hacking by Georgia Weidman, Red Team Field manual, Linux for hackers and resources/links & free mentorship on Twitter. For certs you can start with CompTIA Security+ or the new Penetration testing course introduced by CompTIA. I took the certified ethical hacker (CEH) version 10 certification course and now am preparing to take the Offensive Security OS course which is highly regarded in the infosec industry. 4 Likes 1 Share |

olioxx: The level of the job demands a college degree at a minimum. We are talking about general consensus here not exceptions, we all know hiring managers won't even give you the opportunity to prove yourself, once they scan your CV and see highest degree as Eko Boys High School....lol |
Good evening everyone. I just left school yet I still feel so inadequate because of a lack of skill. I really wish to become a penetration tester, but I don't even have an idea on how to go about it. I don't have any background in programming so please I need the advice of everyone who can help, even with companies where I can learn it. Check online for CCHub or Tech4Dev. They currently have offerings on cybersecurity. You may also win a scholarship. Please let's know how it goes |

That's what am currently learning now. The very first step is getting a Good knowledge of Networking (N+) , Then CSCU (Intro to CYBER SECURITY), before you can venture into WhiteHavking (or Pentester). Networking na the first Koko 3 Likes |

KVN1: Just go to a BootCamp. Look for schools in Lagos or wherever to get on the course. For Pen testing, I think you need to start with Python or something to do with Networks. You can go with teaching yourself, but it is HARD, a school would have a curriculum for you to follow, you would have mentors and you can learn and get into working sooner than someone who is teaching himself/herself.
